We have used these throughout our house during our renovation. They are really the only affordable square recessed lights we could find. They look and function great (we especially like the ability to direct the light) but have found we are changing bulbs quite often. Also, we use them with dimmers and have found we get some humming when they are dimmed. Could be our electrician's fault but in the end we just put lower wattage bulbs in.

Our Architect spec'd these for a bath/laundry remodel this past spring. We all liked them so much, we're using them again on a mud room project. The variety of trim options, the ability to run line voltage (due to the attached transformer) and their value made the decision to use them again an easy one.

Another reviewer mentioned his boxes lacked a template to assist in cutting the installation hole to the correct size, so I checked ours and found that we also did not get any in the 5 we purchased. While the instruction sheet does say a template is supplied, it also states the hole size should be 4 3/8" round.

A note about Y lighting. Our electrician told us about the site and we've been pleased with their selection, communication and speedy shipping!

These work well, are quiet when used with a Lutron Diva magnetic dimmer (can't speak for other dimmers), and are easy to install. Note that the transformer comes off, which makes it much easier to get the housing through the hole in the ceiling, especially if you have a thick plaster ceiling (although I'm not sure how hard it will be to put the pieces back together if you do not have access from above, like we currently do). The clamps were a pain to push out with our ca. 1" thick ceiling, but it worked. Much easier with 1/2" drywall.

The design and the way the transformer is attached to the housing is not the best design. I have used different housings before and they were much easier to install.

Product arrived well packed.Was difficult to pry out the wires from the metal box of the transformer. Package did not have a template and wire nuts as expected. On the whole it is a good product and will buy again given the chance.

I've had only a small amount of electrical work experience, but these were very easy to install and set up. I would suggest though that you measure the hole diameter yourself before you cut it using their suggested diameter. I did a test cut before using their diameter and it would have been slightly too large. If you make it 1/16th to 1/8th smaller, it makes a nice tight fit and you can still get the transformer part in with a little creative wiggling. You can also get pretty close to a support 2x4 by just rotating the unit around so the support clips are not against the support.

I bought four of these fixtures. The good: They are great solutions and very solidly built. The bad: None of the four I received had a cutting template that the instructions stated was "included." I measured instead and cut a 4" hole, only to find it was too small, then had to carve up the drywall by hand to get the transformer in. I got them in, but ended up having to patch the plaster in each location. But then the trims I bought didn't cover the plaster fixes so I had to repaint as well. Needless to say, much more effort than I thought I was originally in for.

Although these look great once you finally get them in place they are not designed to fit in a 4 3/8" hole . the transformer and j box are too big and many curse words will likely be shouted during your installation. Also the clips do not work if any framing is close to the unit.

After a much shorter than expected wait, a large box arrived from YLighting. The box was well packed without any signs of damage.

Pros: Simple to place. Easy to wire. Construction of the housings is excellent. The work well with a dimmer. Best of all no hum.

Cons: The price was a little more than some other sites.

Overall: This was well worth the extra for such quick shipping.

These remodel cans work great where you have truss construction sandwiched between floors with adequate clearance. They require a hole saw but with some thoughtfulness and care plaster dust can be kept to a minimum(use a portable drill and a plastic bag)
