Nigel Coates

Nigel Coates is one of the few English architects who is also renowned as a designer. He maintains the original and coherent idea that architecture and design should carefully reflect the confusion and sensuality of the city. His first success came about in Japan, where, during the 80's and 90's, he designed more than twenty buildings and interior designs. His work reflected that original mixture of enthusiastic intuition and culture that were intrinsic to him.

He subsequently built a wide range of shops, restaurants and museums in Europe and Great Britain, including the National Centre for Popular Music and the Geffrye Museum, both in England. These two works were chosen to represent England at the Biennial of Architecture 200. His furniture design and objects in glass, like those for Hitch Mylius and Salviati play with association and context and merge their stylistic references into sensual flowing forms.

Throughout his career, Coates promoted his ideas by means of exhibitions and publications, amongst which is his most ambitious book "Guide to Ecstacity". He is also a professor of Architectural Design at the Royal College of Art, London.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Glad I got it in spite of previous reviews. I had been looking for a pendant for my stairwell for sometime. I wanted something big, modern and not formal but with a certain amount of "texture". I would have preferred a more "substantial" piece (this IS plastic after all) but it's hard to find "perfect" when the budget is less than. Not that this fixture is inexpensive - I have to agree with other reviewers that the price is a bit steep which is why, when I decided to go ahead and buy this, I went for the "open box"option (thanks for returning it guys!) after being reassured by very friendly and helpful Luke, that all the pieces would be there or I could send this back and get another one. Now, I am not terribly handy or crafty but I was able to put this lamp together in less than an hour and had no problem at all with making it look straight and balanced.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from This lamp, like many on the market today, makes the customer do all the work! While chic and modern in the photo and packaged perfectly upon arrival, the parts and pieces were a bit puzzling and the plastic was disappointing, it looked inexpensive. I know that costs can be kept down by asking the customer to DIY...however, this lamp is too expensive to ask so much time. Apple products seem to have it right, sleek, modern and none of the plastic parts look cheap...and the customer doesn't do the work. Too much to ask?

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nice lamp, assembly a challenge This is a lovely lamp-- once you get it set up. The assembly instructions were really not very detailed. Also, even once you get the individual branches hooked into the frame of the lamp, we found that we still needed to do quite a bit of 'tweaking' to get the branches to balance properly. For the money, I think there should have been less installation required.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from too much work! I was dissapointed in the amount of assemby required for this fixture. We sent it back before putting it together because we were afraid of taking apart if it didn't work! too bad. :)
