One of the great masters of Italian design, Achille Castiglioni was a founding member of ADI in the fifties. The long list of awards he has received include eight Compassi d'Oro. Achille Castiglioni's activity as a designer is an unmistakable blend of simplicity, irony and fun and it shows his close interest in the way objects are used, in the potential offered by technology and in the use of new materials. Like his brothers, Pier Giacomo Castiglioni studied architecture at Milan Polytechnic, taking his degree in 1937. In 1938 Pier Giacomo Castiglioni and his elder brother, Livio, founded a practice in Milan, which the youngest brother, Achille, joined in 1944. All three Castiglioni brothers were interested in both technology and art. Livio left the joint practice in 1952 to go his own way. Pier Giacomo Castiglioni is regarded as the intellectual equal of his brother Achille. Until his untimely death in 1968, Pier Giacomo collaborated with Achille on numerous designer objects. In 1955 the Castiglionis designed "Luminator" for Arredoluce; their "Taraxacum" hanging lamp dates from 1960 and the hanging lamp "Splügen Bräu" for Flos was launched in 1961. Another Castiglioni design for Flos was the 1962 die lamp "Arco", which links the qualities of floor and hanging lamps. The Castiglioni brothers not only exerted a strong influence on the younger generation of Italian designers. Pier Giacomo Castiglioni taught design at Milan Polytechnic from 1946 until his death. Alessi - Italian DesignThe Alessi company was founded by Giovanni Alessi in 1921 in Omegna, Italy. Giovanni, a talented sheet metal worker, produced items by hand for the table and the home out of copper, brass and nickel-silver. Giovanni's son Carlo, trained in industrial design, joined him at Alessi and was responsible for many of the designs produced in the 1930s through the mid 1940s. During the war years, Alessi produced stars for uniforms and mechanical parts for Savoia Marchetti airplanes. After the war, thanks to an enormous demand for brass ladles for the U.S. army, the Alessis expanded the company and started mass production. Carlo's brother Ettore, who joined the company in 1945, was the first to bring outside designers to the company, such as the architects Carlo Mazzeri, Luigi Massoni and Anselmo Vitale. Since that time, the range of products offered by Alessi has expanded to include such items as office accessories and electrical appliances, in collaboration with a growing range of contemporary designers such as Jasper Morrison and Philippe Starck, all the while maintaining Alessi's commitment to design and quality.
