Design by Hani Rashid, 2006.
Hani Rashid tries his hand here in the office/desktop product category. He was born in Cairo in 1958 and lives in New York, where he founded Studio Asymptote in 1988. He's one of the most interesting exponents of the group of the young international designers associated with "digital architecture", and the author of the new Alessi showroom in New York. It is no secret that Alessi is betting on Hani to be one of the potential renovators of their housewares collections over the coming years.

He received his bachelor of architecture degree in 1983 from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada and a masters of architecture degree in 1985 from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in the USA.
In 1988 he co-founded with partner Lise Anne Couture (*1959), Asymptote, architectural design and research practice, based in New York. Hani has been a professor of architecture at the Columbia University graduate school of architecture and planning since 1989. In 1995 he co-developed the School’s advanced digital design program and has also been taught at numerous universities including the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen, the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles, the University of Lund, Weden, the graduate school of design at Harvard University and the Stadleschule in Frankfurt.
Asymptote has produced a body of work that has placed the practice at the forefront of architectural and interactive digital design. Asymptote's projects range from spatial experimentation and installations to building and urban design to computer generated environments and architectures. They have created a virtual trading floor for the New York Stock Exchange and the Guggenheim Virtual Museum, which are fully navigable interactive multi-dimensional architectural environments.
Other clients include the Osaka Gas, the Kyoto Research Park and Knoll International. Hani Rashid was also one of two United States representatives who exhibited in the American Pavillion during the Venice Biennale in 2000.
The work of Asymptote is in various museum collections including MoMA, SFMoMA, the Canadian Center for Architecture, the Netherlands Institute of Architecture and at the Solomon R. Guggenheim.
Alessi - Italian Design
The Alessi company was founded by Giovanni Alessi in 1921 in Omegna, Italy. Giovanni, a talented sheet metal worker, produced items by hand for the table and the home out of copper, brass and nickel-silver. Giovanni's son Carlo, trained in industrial design, joined him at Alessi and was responsible for many of the designs produced in the 1930s through the mid 1940s.
During the war years, Alessi produced stars for uniforms and mechanical parts for Savoia Marchetti airplanes. After the war, thanks to an enormous demand for brass ladles for the U.S. army, the Alessis expanded the company and started mass production. Carlo's brother Ettore, who joined the company in 1945, was the first to bring outside designers to the company, such as the architects Carlo Mazzeri, Luigi Massoni and Anselmo Vitale. Since that time, the range of products offered by Alessi has expanded to include such items as office accessories and electrical appliances, in collaboration with a growing range of contemporary designers such as Jasper Morrison and Philippe Starck, all the while maintaining Alessi's commitment to design and quality.
