Design by Antoni Arola, 2003. Born out of recycling and the unpredictable. Designer Antoni Arola had collected some tossed out sheets of veneer from the street and lived at least a year with the pieces in various corners of his studio. He resisted throwing them out, being attracted to the material. Finally, forced to clean up after experimenting unsuccessfully, Arola found them in bulges in his arms on his way to the trash bin and realized in that marvelous moment, out of chaos and fumbling, that the Leonardo was created. The original design was in maple veneer, then had a successful run in white cardboard, and is now available in poplar veneer (White Wood Leonardo). Poplar is almost white and casts a pale yellow glow. In 1994 Antoni Arola Started his own studio in Barcelona, Estudi Arola. Arola has undertaken design work in a variety of lighting projects for Santa & Cole, Metalarte, B&D, and Viabizzuno. He is acknowledged as a versatile and original designer both for his artistic talents and the inspiration he draws from ancestral cultures, standing out because of his sculptural vision of light. Antoini Arola has been awarded two Delta Design Awards, and in 2003 won the Nacional Design Prize - awarded for "The maturity of a professional career that covers a wide spectrum, ranging from interior design to product design, displaying a great consistency, originality and passion"(jury's note). Santa & ColeSince the late 1980's, Santa & Cole has lived for industrial design, an art consisting of focusing on everyday objects in order to seek a better use experience, thereby leading them to reflect upon material culture.
