    Design by George Carwardine.

The 1227 was originally designed in 1935. George Carwardine, working in the automotive industry, was tinkering in his shop and developed a spring which could be moved easily in every direction yet also remain rigid when held in position. This new spring was the basis for the 1227. The shade was developed to concentrate the beam of light on the task at hand and therefore could use a lesser wattage lamp. Soon it was realized that the 1227 would work just as well for a reading lamp as it did for factory task lighting.

Reissued to celebrate it 75th Anniversary. The Original 1227 is made with aluminum arms and a heavily weighted base for extra stability.

    George Carwardine

    George Carwardine

While working in a studio in his back garden, George had become fascinated with the concept of spring based mechanisms allowing weighted objects to be moved freely into any position where they remain balanced. In 1932 he filed a patent that is clearly identifiable as the first Anglepoise lamp using 4 springs. George went into small scale production; and naturally he used springs supplied by Terry's.

However he soon realised he needed to find a partner. His patent became effective in January 1934 and within a month he had signed an agreement giving Terry's exclusive rights; and they started to manufacture the lamp in return for a royalty. The royalty was 4 shillings a lamp. The new product was launched at the British Industries Fair in Birmingham in February 1934.

Terry's were unable to register Equipoise as a name, so they adopted the word Anglepoise. Terry's had a numbering system where every new product was given a consecutive number. This lamp had two: 1208 was a short arm version with 12 inch arms and the 1209 had 18inch arms – the same dimensions as George's prototype. The 1209 proved the more popular. The management of Terry's felt that the existing Anglepoise 4 spring design was too industrial and they had their eyes on the domestic market. George went back to the drawing board and working with the designers at Terry's they came up with the 3 spring version, known in the Terry's numbering system as the 1227. George applied for a patent 433,617 in 1934, and manufacture commenced in 1935. The sales of this new design quickly overtook the 4 spring original.

The Anglepoise 1227 task light was a disappointment and I returned it.

I was really looking forward to getting my Anglepoise lamp but was very disappointed when I actually started using it.

The light is unbalanced and difficult to adjust. The head flies up at the slightest provocation so that it is not really adjustable. You just have to carefully move the arm around until it's balanced just right and the light shines down. Otherwise, the light flies up and shines on the wall.

Furthermore, at this price, I was expecting a little tank of a light. Not at all. It is cheaply made in China and not significantly different from the version you can purchase at elsewhere. Very disappointing.

    Excellent product. Great design.

I purchased this lamp in red for task lighting in my office. It is a great design and provides excellent lighting. The lamp arrived promptly in perfect condition.

I only wished the assembly instructions would specify that you need to screw in the light bulb before the lamp will remain in a desired position. It took me a few minutes to figure this out.

I'm very pleased with this light.

This 1227 Task Light is very well made, and absolutely true to the original design. The fit and finish of all the parts is excellent, and assembling it was much simpler than I'd expected. I can't find anything wrong with it. It's a well-crafted, quality product.

    Such a quality lamp

I adore this lamp! I had been searching for a vintage model for a long time, but they are riduculously expensive and not usually wired for the US. I was so excited to find one here and I couldn't be happier with it. It is very substantial, easy to adjust and puts out a perfect amount of light. As always, Y Lighting's fast shipping and great communication were excellent.
