Achille Castiglioni

Born in Milan (1918-2002), Achille Castiglioni started work as an architect and designer with his brothers Livio and Pier Giacomo in 1938. One of the great masters of Italian design, Achille Castiglioni was a founding member of ADI in the fifties. The long list of awards he has received include eight Compassi d'Oro. Achille Castiglioni's activity as a designer is an unmistakable blend of simplicity, irony and fun and it shows his close interest in the way objects are used, in the potential offered by technology and in the use of new materials.

Pier Giacomo Castiglioni

The Italian designer and architect Pier Giacomo Castiglioni is the second of the three Castiglioni brothers. Like his brothers, Pier Giacomo Castiglioni studied architecture at Milan Polytechnic, taking his degree in 1937. In 1938 Pier Giacomo Castiglioni and his elder brother, Livio, founded a practice in Milan, which the youngest brother, Achille, joined in 1944. All three Castiglioni brothers were interested in both technology and art. Livio left the joint practice in 1952 to go his own way. Pier Giacomo Castiglioni is regarded as the intellectual equal of his brother Achille. Until his untimely death in 1968, Pier Giacomo collaborated with Achille on numerous designer objects.

In 1955 the Castiglionis designed "Luminator" for Arredoluce; their "Taraxacum" hanging lamp dates from 1960 and the hanging lamp "Splügen Bräu" for Flos was launched in 1961. Another Castiglioni design for Flos was the 1962 die lamp "Arco", which links the qualities of floor and hanging lamps. The Castiglioni brothers not only exerted a strong influence on the younger generation of Italian designers. Pier Giacomo Castiglioni taught design at Milan Polytechnic from 1946 until his death.

FLOS Lighting

FLOS was founded in 1962. The very same year they began producing a number of lamps that were to become classics in Italian industrial design. These first lamps were Arco, Relemme, Toio and Taccia all designed by Achille and Piergiacomo Castiglioni. As a tangible proof of their timeless design and technical excellence, these lamps continue to be produced today.

It all started with cocoon . . .In 1959 Arturo Eisenkeil from Merano, an importer of cocoon — a spray-on plastic coating produced in the United States — was tracking down possible applications for this new material. He joined forces with Dino Gavina and Cesare Cassina and set up a company to produce lighting fixtures. This marked the beginning of the long-standing association in the area of design with the Castiglioni brothers and Tobia Scarpa. The first cocoon lamps ever created were the offspring of this collaboration: Viscontea, Taraxacum and Gatto by the Castiglioni brothers and Fantasma by Scarpa. FLOS moved from Merano to the province of Brescia in 1964: At first to Nave and then to the current premises in Bovezzo. Sergio Gandini became chairman of the company in 1965. In 1974, the company became the owner of Arteluce one of the key Italian companies in the industrial design sector. Gino Sarfatti, an industrialist and designer, is the founder of Arteluce. Several models designed by Sarfatti himself have been incorporated into the product range.

From the very outset, FLOS has been characterized by its high-quality approach to lamp design and production. Many of the numerous lamps designed for the company, first by Achille and Piergiacomo, are undoubtedly some of the best-known and most successful products of industrial design. They have won awards and historical critical accolades, and are included in all the most important collections and design museums around the world.

FLOS' production will continue to be imbued with various design trends that embody their attention to leading-edge research combined with highly-efficient production, sales and communications. In 2002, the company celebrated forty years production of designer lamps.

compliments barcelona ensemble well

purchased to compliment ensemble of barcelona sofa/chairs/ottomans/table. probably the best fixture i could find for this location. one complaint is that it is difficult to recess the power cord in the support arm for the lamp as proposed by flos. ylighting had flawless customer service and competitive price.

Modern Classic

I bought my Arco lamp in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1980. Although I have lived in SA since 1982, my Arco is alive and well and residing at my brother's house in Edinburgh, where it has pride of place. It has survived at least 4 house movings and is remarkably robust, even though it looks so slender. It is a timeless classic, alongside the Walter Gropius chair and chaise longue from the Bauhaus.

Magnificent and timeless

I've had this lamp for 30 years and have seen it in numerous films and TV shows. Starting with James Bond, Goldfinger. It was recently in Dr. Who and most recently in Iron Man. There was also a desk lamp version on CSI NY this week.

Gorgeous lamp!

The Arco is gorgeous, but watch out if you have 8 foot's hard to put together because you have only a few inches to spare. (But, once installed, it's perfect!)

Worth every penny . . .

I have owned my Arco lamp for 5 years and am so happy that I spent money that I did not have back then for a piece that I simply love and of which I have never tired. The best never comes cheaply.

I bought the Arco Floor Lamp in 1970, and I been enjoying it since than. I paid $1,000. 00 for it than. I purchased it when I was living in New York.

Five stars. It looks just as good as when I first bought it.

The Flos Arco is of exquisite quality and style, and provides a sense of openness to most any contemporary decor.

The Arco lamp is stunning in appearance with its simple structure of channel tubing; polish globe and eloquent marble block. The parts are of high quality, right down to the wiring. The clever design permits assembly and disassembly without much effort. Some may wonder if the hole in the block is fashion or function. Well, it's actually both and it becomes quite obvious once you lay everything out. Both the height and reach of the globe is adjustable to suit your taste, location and decor. However, if you have an 8-foot ceiling it will fit but just barely! In fact, I had to deviate from the assembly guide by attaching all of extensions before attaching the support arm to the block. You will need the added weight of the combined extensions to flex the arc downward in order to obtain the razor-blade ceiling clearance.

Cleaning is simple with plain clear water and a soft cloth and no chemicals should ever be used. For a little added protection I carefully applied a thin coat of Renaissance Wax to the entire assembly but that's just me.

The Flos Arco is virtually unchanged since 1962 so there is little point to highlighting its features but I'll try. It's supplied with a heavy-duty 120-vac plug with a foot-actuated switch. The stainless steel channel tubing is designed to flex and is quite durable for its intended purpose. The marble block is heavy and will remain stable on any hard surface floor. However, as nice looking as marble is, it's also delicate and will chip or stain if abused.

Overall the lamp is absolutely gorgeous. It's not likely to ever go out of style since this lamp has been in production since 1962. In fact, it's typically found as background art in several modern furniture magazines.

It is everything I wanted.

I discovered this lamp when my grandmother gave me over 30 years of Architectural Digest in the early 1980's.

I have wanted it ever since.

YLighting has such wonderful service. There is no doubt that I will be making more purchases from them.

I have wanted this lamp since I was in the 5th grade.

I got 40 years of Architectural Digest when I was in the fifth grade, and I fell in love with this lamp. I asked my aunt for it at xmas. I didn't get it...

A lame copy would not suffice.

I have it now, and it is everything I wanted and more.

The perforations in the top of the shade allow light from the silver topped bulb to dapple the ceiling, while the white interior of the shade reflects ample light to the surface below it.

Customer Questions:

Q: What is the best way to clean my Arco floor lamp?

A: The best way to clean an Arco Floor Lamp is with a soft cloth with mild soap. Do not use Alcohol or Solvents, those will damage the finishes.
