The Castore, designed by Michele De Lucchi in 2003, is a table lamp that provides diffused incandescent lighting. It features a diffuser in white handblown glass, with external etched finish. Available in four sizes. Stem crafted of steel tubing, covered by a tapered sleeve in white translucent molded polycarbonate, allowing for partial soft diffusion of light from diffuser. Base in die-cast metal alloy with white epoxy powder finish. Models 25, 35 and 42 feature a touch dimmer incorporated into the base; Model 14 has an on/off switch located on the cord.
Model 14 uses 1 X 60W G9 halogen (included), model 25 uses 1 X 100W max and models 35 and 42 use 1 X 150W max halogen (medium base double envelope) or incandescent bulbs (not included).

More recently, Ron Rezek's line of practical and affordable designs, including many wall sconces, bath lights and mirrors was acquired by Artemide.
What can I say? This is exactly what I was looking for. I read the reviews carefully and made sure I got a size that had the dimmer. This is bright when it needs to be and is very cool looking. Not for the person with traditional taste, this is a modern lamp.

Artemide is a headache to deal with but nice lamp
Nice clean design and soft lighting from this Castore Table lamp, love the dimmer on the base! Just beware dealing with Artemide, I got sent 2 incorrect lamps before I got this one!

needs an in-line dimmer
Pretty cool, but awfully bright. I mean, really, really bright. We took it to a lamp maker to replace the in-line on-off switch with an in-line Lutron dimmer. They don't come in clear plastic to match the cord, but, oh well.

Beautiful! Elegant!
This is a really simple, lovely lamp that produces lots of light but takes up little space. I put it by the window-it looks like the moon!
I wish it had a switch on the lamp itself (like the larger sizes do), and I also wish this could dim (like the larger sizes do). But..for half the price, not bad!

Adorable lamp!
This is our third Castore lamp in our house. We just love the design of this. It is really pretty ball , and for someone who likes modern and none of the dowdy lampshade style table lamp, this is a perfect lamp for you.

Q:I have some questions about the bulb for the Artemide Castore Table Lamp. Does this lamp require a candalabra-type bulb, or does it take a standard incandescent bulb? Can I use a flourescent bulb in this lamp?
A:The Castore 14 (the smallest) uses a G9 based halogen lamp, the larger sizes use standard incandescent lamps (E26 or medium base). There is a dimmer on the fixture, so if you choose to use a self-ballasted compact fluorescent lamp, it will need to be a dimmable one.

In contrast to new construction housings, remodeling housings are appropriate when you have limited or no access to the space above a new fixture, such as in an apartment or a home without crawl spaces or attics above.
New Construction Housings
In contrast to remodeling housings, new construction housings are bulkier and need to be installed between joist beams or onto hangar bars and thus you need full access to the space above the fixture. This style is best used if you are building in a new space, gutting a room, or have an attic above or pop out ceiling, etc.
IC Rated
IC stands for: insulation contact. Thus, IC-rated housings can come in direct contact with thermal insulation.
Non-IC Rated
Non-IC stands for: non insulation contact. Thus, non-IC-rated housings must be kept at least 3 inches away from any insulation.
MR16 Halogen Bulb
MR 16 is a standard format for halogen multifaceted reflector light bulbs. MR16 lamps are regularly used in place of standard incandescent light bulbs as they harness and shoot light, resulting in less light loss than a traditional bulb. These are best used when you want focused light such as in a pendant over a countertop or an accent light on a painting.
UL Listed
UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories, a non-profit company that tests electrical copmenents and equipment for potenital hazards. If something is UL-listed, I means it has met the agency's safety requirements for things like fire, shock hazards, etc. While you can buy and install non-UL listed fixtures, sometimes insurance policies will limit their liabilities accordingly, inspectors may not approve permits, etc.

Damp Location
If the environment exposes the lighting system to moisture condensation, then the location is a damp location.. Lights that are approved for damp locations can be used in sheltered outdoor areas such as roofed porches or interior locations subject to moderated degrees of moisture such as basements.
Wet Location
If the lighting system is exposed to direct impact by water from splashing or dripping, which will make the fixture wet, then the location is a wet location. Your most common wet locations are uncovered outdoor areas.
Baffle Trim
The term Baffle refers to the groved style of the trim. This trim is the most popular choice of all recessed lighting trims and is best used in living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and dens.
