Nothing comes close to the classic design of this floor lamp. Mine is located in my main conversation area in a larger, open-space living room. I have ceiling lighting in the space, but when I want to create an intimate conversational atmosphere I use the Tolomeo with the ceiling lighting well dimmed. It is the perfect choice for the area. Like others have expressed, my primary complaint with this lamp is that one must be careful about its horizontal positioning because the floor balance is not sufficient to maintain stability in certain horizontal positions. This problem could be easily addressed if the manufacturer put their minds to it.

I bought it for my 144 sq ft work studio for its striking, bold look and for extra task lighting. Though later backordered and shipment delayed a little longer than expected after the initial purchase date, the lamp came in good shape packed within 4 separate boxes. As many reviewers have commented, it's a beautiful light and unique in appearance. It positions smoothly and works fine for task as well as general room lighting. I'm using a 75W equivalent LED which is plenty of light and not too coldly white wih the parchment diffuser. Definitely an investment, but it seemed ylighting offered the best overall price among multiple sellers.

The lamp is really changing the atmosphere of the room it enters. When off, it has a sculptural presence. When on, it diffuses a very gentle warm light and becomes the main object of the room.

Packaging is excellent. Mounting takes less than 1 hour.

Large shade (17 inches) is recommended for living room/family room.

Finding the right position in the room takes some time.

So I would say that there is clearly a before and an after.

We have a prewar apartment furnished with midcentury and clean-lined modern pieces. Period-typical for a 1920s building, there is no light fixture in the living room. I did not want to install a ceiling light, but also did not want a room full of lamps. I've been eyeing the Tolomeo Mega for over a year, but had a number of doubts: (1) would it look too '80s Italian with the chrome and the wire? (2) it has no bottom diffuser to shield the bulb-- would the overhead illumination be too harsh?; (3) is the quality really that great? With another light-deprived winter imminent, I got the Mega with a 17" parchment shade. It's great. Exceeded expectations. We put it behind the corner of the L-shaped sofa -- it is a reading lamp if you sit in the corner, room lighting if you extend it over the middle of the space, and it swings over the adjacent dining table as task or dining light. It does not scream its presence, but it is lovely to look at. It has no disputes with its mid-century neighbors (in fact, it seems to like the Nelson lamp in the room). It is very tall, and the arch emphasizes the high ceilings, so it is not at all claustrophobic (that was a 4th concern). The globe bulb is not harsh, especially with the dimmer judiciously used. Finally, it is solid. A precise piece of lighting. I should have acted sooner.

I have just finished putting it together. It took me 2 hours 'cos I was very careful and it was rather heavy (I'm 80). I also took my time as I was unsure whether it would be the knockout I envisioned, and, if not, I would then have to put it all back again properly in the boxes and ship it back . It is now in place and the news is that it looks fabulous, absolutely perfect and just stunning. Its even better than I thought. I bought this floor lamp overhanging our dining table and it is the perfect alternatitve to a pendant/chandelier (I did not want to go to an electrician for hardwiring, at least for now). The Mega Floor Lamp is simple and well made. Beautiful in the room.

Some notes:

-- Although not visually bulky, lamp has a very broad reach, and so you should consider the proportions in your room.

-- 17" shade is not too large (in fact, looks small) in a high-ceilinged room (12 ft ceilings).

-- Parchment shade gives off a warm amberish-yellowish light, even with a double-walled halogen bulb. I had expected a whiter light, but still fine and beautiful.

-- Design of wiring, which runs down the main pole on the outside, is not visually neat. Could have been better designed. Wiring perhaps should have been clear instead of black?

-- On-off switch and dimmer is ugly and bulky, and could have been better executed.

Big picture: Beautiful, simple light with some pedestrian wiring design.

I live in a converted 1912 carriage house that also serves as my urban design and art studio. All of my furniture are classic modern pieces. This lamp really brighten up our living room with its light as well as its sleek design. It goes with 6-sitter De Las Espada dining table very well. It was like a picture on Dwell magazine. We originally ordered a 17-inch shase which does not go with 500 square feet living room. So we exchanged with a 14-inch and it worked out very well even though we need to wait for an approval for exchange and wrap the previous back into the original box. While we are waiting, we tried a halogen light bulb without a shade and it also looked very modern as well. The lamp itself is excellent in its design and function.

This modern piece is great to create a comfy yet stylish ambience. It is very versatile as it can be used as a focal point of a room or blend in well with the rest of your furniture pieces. Using 150W halogen maybe not be sufficient for a large room but it is enough for my living room in about a 750 sq one bedroom apt. The light hangs over the couch, which can be quite hot under the bulb, but it can easily be rotated when you are sitting on the couch so that you do not have to be sweating. I am very satisfied with the purchase and it looks more expensive than it costs. I would definitely recommend it to others.

The lamp is an architectural gem but more importantly, it fills our apartment with light which was most needed. We use a double envelope halogen bulb and it floods the ceiling in our first floor dark apartment but also allows us to direct light to our table where we use our computers, read and watch television.

Solidly built. Works at it should. Shade floats. While quite tall, takes very little room. You know it's there, but it's not imposing. Looks sharp in our living room with furniture that is not too MCM. Make sure to get a dimmable CFL. Relative to the lamp, the dimmer could be more substantial (it's plastic and light weight). I like the functionality of the lamp. The lamp and the direction and intensity of the light can be manipulated, which in turn, can change the mood of the room.

The Tolomeo Mega Floor Lamp is a great example of classic design, and it lights up a room quite nicely too!

It is very easy to assemble, and the heavy base assures that the lamp will not wobble or fall down easily. The chrome body contrasts very nicely with the parchment shade. The versatile positioning of the arms means that it can be placed in a variety of locations, not just the usual corner or next to a sofa or chair. This is a great lamp at a great price. Its so very hard to find a classic look at a reasonable price. You usually have to compromise and buy from a West Elm or other outlet for an imitation of a classic design. Inevitably you regret it because the quality and design details are not there. This is an affordable, no compromise lamp. Its great as a lamp and makes a strong statement,. The look is modern and it is well made. We have two tolomeo lamps mounted on the walls for bedside lighting - the look works for our mid century home. The only gripe would be to be sure you have the right lamp shade color before you order - they wouldn't let us exchange the shade without returning the whole lamp (only the maker knows why). Otherwise, great experience with Y-Lighting. Will be buying from them again shortly (love those Nelson Bubble lamps!)

I received this beautiful lamp very quickly after placing my order in several well packed boxes. The assembly was easy if cumbersome because of the size of the lamp. The assembled Tolomeo looks stunning in my living room (I did have to buy the appropriate bulb) and adds a great architectural element. I didn't realize that the lamp came with a foot switch and dimmer, which was a nice surprise, since it allows me to use less than the 150 watts in the bulb. The foot switch is also very convenient and out of the way, not distracting from the clean lines of the chrome construction.

For a while we've been using the Artemide Tolomeo desk lamp for our studio. It's a classic lamp that never fails. When we moved into our new studio (which is a converted 1800's loft with 20ft ceilings) the mega floor lamp seemed to be the only choice. It's modern and purposeful and task-oriented in a way that few large floor lamps can be.
