The IN-EI collection revolves around a fabric derived from entirely recycled materials, diffusing light in an extremely interesting way. The fiber is made using PET bottles, processed using innovative technology that reduces both energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Issey Miyake's artistic vision, combines new a 3D mathematical process with the Japanese tradition of light.

Each lampshade is created using 2 or 3D mathematical principles, where the light and shade harmoniously alternate. Issey Miyake's unique folding technology creates both statuesque forms as well as sufficient solidity. The structure of the recycled material, together with an additional surface treatment allows these shades to perfectly keep their shape without the need for an internal frame. The shades can easily be stored flat when not in use.

The Tatsuno Otoshig Pendant Light is composed of a recycled fabric shade and an internal structure composed of a diffuser tube and LED chip. The LED light source is comprised of optics that project along the diffusing PMMA tube. A white powder painted die-cast aluminum cylinder acts as heat sync for the LED chip. Features a canopy in white opal polycarbonate with laser etched Artemide and IN-EI logo0s. Dimmable with electronic low voltage dimmer (sold separately). Ships with 3 feet of cable.

Issey Miyake

Issey Miyake was born in Hiroshima, Japan in 1738. He studied graphic design at the Tama Art University in Tokyo, graduating in 1964. After graduation, Miyake worked in Paris and New York City before returning to Tokyo in 1970 and founding the Miyake Design Studio. In the late 1980s, Miyake began to experiment with new methods of pleating which would allow both flexibility of movement for the wearer as well as ease of care and production.

Issey Miyake had a long time friendship with Dame Lucie Rie, an Austrian-born pottery artist. She bequeathed to him her substantial collection of ceramic and porcelain buttons, which he integrated into his designs. He also developed a friendship with Apple's Steve Jobs and produced the black turtle necks that would become a staple in Job's signature attire.

In 1994 and 1999, Miyake turned over the designs of his collections to his associate, so that he could return to research full-time. In 2004, Issey Miyake established THE MIYAKE ISSEY FOUNDATION and in February 2011, it was approved by the Cabinet Office of the Government of Japan as a Public Interest Incorporated Foundation. As of 2012, Issey Miyake is one of the co-Directors of 21 21 DESIGN SIGHT, Japan's first design museum.

Is the Tatsuno Otoshigo Pendant Light By Issey Miyake made of a suitable material that would allow for installation in a restaurant that has some smoke, etc. in the air around tables, etc. Also, is fabric / shade cleanable??? Thanks. R

Asked by: rich in LA
Hi there, and thanks for your interest in this design. Absolutely, this material is extremely unique in that the fibers are made entirely from recycled PET bottles, meaning that the unit is far more durable than a thin or flimsy paper lantern shade that could discolor due to the smoke and activity of your restaurant. These shades can store flat when not in use, and can easily be cleaned with a mild soap and water along with a microfiber cloth to grab onto large dust particles that develop. Just make sure to avoid detergent based multipurpose cleaners because the harsh chemicals would deteriorate the fibers or discolor the shade.
