Azumi Round Wall Sconce
The story of Astro Lighting began in 1997, when the two lighting enthusiasts, John Fearon and James Bassant saw an opportunity to re-establish British lighting design. Their goal was to bring the awareness to the modern lighting concepts and attract the international audiences.
The Astro ethos aims to create an elegantly clear visual language that not only marks out its product design today but also defines what contemporary lighting can and should be. Astro knows good lighting design should be honest, accessible, engaging and durable. This philosophy is the lifeblood of the Astro brand. With a team of eight creative design engineers, many of whom joined the business on graduation, there is now a wealth of experience to bring to life the Astro ethos of pure, modern and endlessly sophisticated.
Newly available to the North American market, Astro Lighting is excited to introduce its clean and contemporary lighting range to both residential and commercial customers.
As an art student in the 1980s James Bassant was already drawn to product design. His talent was spotted early and James secured one of the coveted places on Kingston University's Furniture and Product Design course. At Kingston, James thrived in the creative environment and under the tutorship of various visiting designers including Ross Lovegrove and Mary Little.
After graduating in 1989 the next significant accolade for Astro's co-founder and design director was to be selected as one of a handful of students to exhibit at Sit, a furniture design show held at the Business Design Centre in Islington. At the exhibition the well known lighting designer Shui-Kay Khan spotted James’s potential, and offered him a job at his lighting design practice. This was to set James on a course that was to prove formative for his career.
His subsequent move to Shawe Lighting in Tottenham sowed the seed for Astro's creation. It was here that James met Astro co-founder John Fearon. They shared a passion for pure design and architecture, through which they were able to establish a clear design language for their new lighting business in 1997.
Eighteen years on, James’s dedication to design is undiminished. He leads a team of eight designers at Astro, using his own creative skills every day and drawing on his considerable experience to inspire those around him.View other products by James Bassant
