We replaced a home depot 52 inch ceiling fan with the 42 inch Ball Ceiling fan with light kit. The packaging was superb. All parts were present and labeled. Instructions were clear, assembly was easy. If you follow the directions in order, there should be no problem. The product seems very well made. The 42 inch blades move a lot of air--much more than the home depot brand. I used the #9A fan controller (you have to call Y lighting to order it---not on the website) to control two fans. Works great.

Shortly after having two of these fans installed, one started working only sporadically. Always worked when the electrician was present so I gave up trying to have it fixed and never complained to the seller, thinking it was a wiring problem. It finally stopped working altogether after a year. Final verdict from a new electrician is that although meant as an indoor/outdoor (it's in a porch protected on three sides, screen on the 4th side) it corroded - no wiring problem. Its twin is fine and has been for almost 10 years now. Hate to replace the one that works as two different style fan/lights side by side won't do. Do I try my luck and buy another or keep waiting for the second to die?

We bought this fan for our bedroom and would be positioned over the bed with a 10' ceiling. I mistakenly thought there would be a fan control sold that could remotely reverse the direction of the fan, but there is not. We would have to move the bed, get a tall ladder out and flip the switch "inside, or on top of the fan housing". Very unfortunate design. The fan is well-constructed, beautiful, and easy to install. Unfortunately, the wall switch is less good. The backing plate was smaller than my electrical box, so I had to buy a different backing plate to use with the switch. Also, the action on the switch is extremely stiff. You have to push hard to change the setting.

Obviously, the fan quality is a much bigger deal than the switch quality, so I'm still very happy with this purchase. But I wish the Modern Fan Co. would put a little more thought into their switch designs.

We ordered two 52" fans with fan speed control. One came also with a light kit, and one without. Both are beautiful, elegant and were easy to install. They are also quiet. They were well balanced when the installation was complete- no need for the balancing kit.

The fan with a light surprised me by looking better in person than it did in the photo.

My only problem with these fans is the available lengths for down rods. Recommended installation of the fan blades is 230 cm above the floor. For our 9 foot ceilings, a 10 inch rod would have been about right, but the only options available are 3, 6, 16 inch rods. I think the manufacturer should be taking standard ceiling heights into account if they are going to offer 3 down rod lengths.

My two ball fans are 18 feet up, so the manual reverse function at the fan is unfortunately useless. I called the store and got a very helpful person who suggested that in my case with two triangular cutouts in a two story area, that I can best encourage circulation by having one permanently pull air while the other permanently pushes air, hence, a circular motion distributing air around two stories. Works well. I also like the wall controls that are mounted upstairs while remote controls are set to control both fans from the main level. It was difficult to not order the stainless finish, but I am now glad that I got the white finish instead because it is too easy to have too many visual distractions; the white blends in while the ball shape is attractively modern and compact.

Renovating a 1940s cottage with my wife, I've had a chance to install a lot of lights, and this has been one of the best to install. The machining is amazing, and the fan feels solid. It was easier to install than any fan I have ever installed. All that would be for nothing if it didn't look so great. We went for the 18watt cfl light kit and I think it really adds to the look. It is simple and modern, but still fits with the look of the room.

We also went with maple blades, instead of the painted metal blades. I thought they would be a blond maple, though they are a bit darker. My wife has commented it would be nice if they offered a cherry or mahogany finish, as a darker, reddish look would be a nice contrast with the brushed aluminum base. That is the only thing I could suggest to make the fan better and hopefully in the future they will offer more blade choices like they do for other fan models.

Will definitely consider modern fan company again.

When I bought this fan, I thought it looked cool and figured that if I liked it, I would buy 3 more given the reasonable price. This thing is cheap alright. The blades are made with cheap wood painted silver. We see some of the screws holding the blades. Overall it looks like a fan I would have had at the dorm during my days as a design student. I have to call these guys, it's missing screws so my electrician has to come back. I mean come on.

We have the Halo fan in the master bedroom so another choice from MF Co was a natural choice. We love the clean lines. My only negative is that we ordered CFL (trying to be environmentally conscious!) and were a little surprised that the light cover is a bit pointed, not round like a ball in the photos. This difference ought to be noted more prominently. Also, the control switch is bulkier than I realized would not fit in our 70-year old switch box (other fan was installed in new construction) so additional work required.

Sleek, contemporary, though in a retrofuturist way--an upside-down propellor, a perisphere with wings. It might better complement an architect's studio or a high-ceilinged assembly plant, but it sits nicely as our family room's centerpiece and doesn't conflict visually with the ten-foot-wide French doors and leaded glass transom, or the built-in bookcases, despite its industrial design. We have the four-blade model and mounted it close to the ceiling using the three-inch rod. We like it.

Enjoying minimilist design, while trying to stay cool in the Texas summers – this fan is perfect. The body was a great deal smaller than I had imagined, making it quite visually light. The white blades are a wonderful matte white, which subtly contrasts with the high-gloss white of the body. I opted for the florescent light addition, and couldn't be happier. I was concerned that the egg shape with the light would be too extreme, but honestly it doesn't draw attention to it in the space. I bought the Ball Ceiling Fan with light (NOT the Hugger) and had it installed with the 3 inch downrod. This is closer to the ceiling than the Ball Hugger (rather unfortunate name) fan. It works well in our top floor office with low ceilings. I wish it came with the option not to have a dimmer. In an office, I don't ever want dim light. I do, however, love the spare design, and the fan (42") provides plenty of air.

The Ball model adds a great deal of refinement a room; it has a presence that completes a room, but does not become a focal point.

I've now installed three units with light packs and Lutron Maestro Fan/Light controls. Only at the highest speed is there any audible blade noise (the motor is silent at all speeds). The light pack adds a nice source of ambient light.

I do wish that the blades were actually a milled and brushed aluminum instead of painted wood. I'm guessing that doing so would necessitate a minimum floor to bottom of fixture clearance that is seen with most industrial fans.

They blend in because of their geometric design - but they also look formal because they have those 90 degree corners on the blades. We ordered a ball hugger and found it installed easily with no problems. However, the 24" down rod on the standard version identified a basic design flaw: there's too much give at the hanging bracket, which causes wobble.

Basically, the half ball seats in the hanging bracket with a single slotted channel and ridge (see step 8 of the instructions on this page). This allows the fan a lot of play regardless of leveling components and tightening screws. The fan we're replacing has two separate channels and ridges to prevent this.

Modern Fan Company's suggestion was to loosen the smaller screw at the end of the down rod, then re-level the fan mechanism using gravity, then retighten this small screw (basically step 7, but balancing, not just tightening). The problem here is that because there's so much play in the half ball/hanging bracket connection, this is nearly impossible. That is, you cannot loosen, balance, and tighten at the bottom of the down rod without tilting the entire assembly because the single slotted channel has too much give.

I attempted a blade balance as a separate measure, thinking that this might solve the problem. I think the underlying design flaw is too significant to easily balance the blades with weights alone. At the very least you'll go nuts attempting to do so.

To be fair, I'm still working with Modern Fan Company to solve this problem, but my feeling is that they took shortcuts in the construction of this fan that make proper installation extremely difficult, if not impossible.

The Ball Ceiling Fan is great....looks just as good installed as it does in pictures. The order process went very smoothly, I think we had our fan 3 days after ordering it. It was slightly more labor intensive to install than other fans we have had because each fan blade has three screws that have to be screwed in and they are kind of at a tricky angle. But, other than that it was easy and the fan runs very quiet.

I finally got my "ball" fan installed, after years of listening to others rave about their various Modern Fan Co. fans. It's really well made and the motor is silent. I just wish there was a speed between low and medium. I can't imagine ever using "high" - it's so strong I think the house would lift off.

Quality product, from the fan itselvf to the wall speed control. Simple design fits my contemporary houses perfectly. Different lengths of down rods accomodate all of my ceiling heights from 9' to 12'. Of this recent order, I needed 16 fans and they worked out great in each location. My only second thought is on my color selection. I chose brushed aluminum, and wonder if white would make them blend in better yet still look modern. Fans with light fixture are extremely attractive as well.

The fan is well made with a clean and simple design. This particular unit has a raw aluminum finish that looks handsome. The mechanicals seem to be high quality and everything fits together fairly well. The blades are a simple plywood construction with silver paint, which should make for more efficient running.

The installation instructions were not exceptional, but clear enough.

It operates exceptionally smoothly and quietly.

On a scale of 1 to 5 (5 being highest), I give it a 4 for design and quality.

I already have this simple, modern fan in my kitchen, in the aluminum finish, where it picks up the tones of the stainless-steel countertops. Now I'm having this new matte white one installed upstairs in my new office/guest room. My hope is that the white will disappear against the ceiling and provide air circulation without making a major fashion statement. It's helpful that the fan arrives with downrods of different lengths: I'll be able to choose one that's shorter than the one downstairs, where the ceilings are a foot taller. I did NOT buy the lighting element for this fan. Had it simply been a half-sphere that replaced the bottom half of the ball, I might have; however, it has an odd dewdrop shape that completely ruins the very basic lines of the fan. Too bad.

Had seen but never owned a Modern Fan product. Well worth it. No comparison to what you find in mass retailers. A bit more difficult to install, but any moderate diy-er can do it. I got the incandescent light version and it lights up a dark landing brilliantly.!! Way better than expected. They also ship the stainless ball anyway, which kind of wasteful, but good in case ever want to use w/o the light. Y-Lighting was cheapest as well - went to a local home design store to see in person b4 I bought, they said they would match price until I showed them -- they declined. Very solid and the remote works very well.

Overall, we are very happy with this fan. Would have given the Ball 5 stars but a few parts were missing when fan was shipped (manufacturer's fault).

Upon ordering fan, I thought the blades of this fan were metal. They are wood, painted silver. The look did not disappoint, though.

Fan was not difficult to install because instructions were straight-forward, although a set of screws were missing and the wrong CF light bulb was sent. Manufacturer apologized and sent missing pieces quickly.

I think this is the best fan that Modern Fan Company makes. The design is superb without any bells and whistles. It conveniently comes packaged with three different stem lengths from which to choose, and I haven't detected any wobble when using the longest stem. My preference is for the 52" diameter blades which are better proportioned and provide better performance. A great buy.

This is our third Ball Fan. We have one (sans light) downstairs, and one each in the bedrooms (one with CF, one with a halogen bulb if I remember correctly). I'm not totally wild about the lighting - the CF is awfully bright for a bedroom (but we wanted the energy efficiency) and I don' like the way the dimmer works on the halogen light (you need to go all the way up in brightness before you can scale it back down, which isn't ideal for a bedroom either) but we love the efficiency, the design, and how quiet these fans are.

Obviously, we would buy another in a heartbeat! And wouldn't think of buying from anywhere other than YLighting.

Two small complaints - paddles are wood painted to appear as aluminum, was expecting aluminum blades - however this does not seem to be an issue and one would not be able to tell the difference

I purchased two Ball fans, one silver and one white with a light. Both have beautiful, clean lines and are very quiet. The halogen light looks great with the white fan, and it lights up my 10 x 10 room. I'm a novice with ceiling fans—this is my first experience—and I am very happy. However, I will likely install a second fan in my 14 x 16 foot room, as I'm finding it needs more circulation than one fan can provide (it's adjacent to an open kitchen). Someone installed the fans for me, but I had many questions,, and Ylighting was incredibly helpful with regard to technical and customer support.

I ordered 2 ball ceiling fans. One arrived perfect, the ball of the other was scuffed. Kudos to ylighting for quickly replacing the ball portion, but that fan suffers from some rocking issues. I'm assuming that this can be fixed with the blade weights provided in the box, but I have not gotten that far just yet. The fans do look really, really cool. Nothing like them at Home Depot or Lowes.

My husband and I spent many months drooling over the modern fan ads in Dwell and finally decided to purchase the oh so very cool ball fan for every room. We ordered one to make to make sure it was as good as it looked in the glossy magazine. When it arrived we were somewhat dissapointed to discover that it wasn't as slick and beautifully made as it appeared in the ad. The metal on the ball is poorly finished with rough edges and the blades have tacky looking screws showing on the underside. With regards to value for money, this fan is clearly overpriced. Nevertheless, despite it's flaws, it's made itself at home in our bedroom. As for the rest of the house, it's back to the drawing board in search of an alternative.

We just had this fan installed yesterday, so I can't speak for how it wears, but so far it's terrific. We put it in our living room, which has double height ceilings. We really needed something that would move the air, and this fan is really powerful. It looks great, and there were no problems with the installation. Two little complaints: why, on a switch with 4 speeds, would 4 be the slowest and 1 be the fastest? Also, the fan, when it's on its highest speed, wobbles a bit. We've got it on the longest rod,which may contribute to the problem. Overall, though, great fan and a great value.

I have purchased many fans, but Modern Fans seem to be one of the best quality for the money. This fan has machined metal finish which is really nice. I think the mark of a great fan is perfectly balanced blades so no wobble is present. This one fails that. This is a manufacturing issue and not design. I haven't had a chance to balance with the kit provided but its not as bad as other fans like an emerson I bought.

As a commercial designer and homeowner(this fan went in my home)lighting and accessories are selected after much consideration and research. I read the reviews and the fans are indeed beautiful however I prefer the aesthetics of the fan without the light. However, I bought two of the fans with lights, one in the aluminum to go in my family room/kitchen and a white one to go in the master bedroom. Function before form in this case.

The light is functional and a bonus I just wish they were able to design it rounded. The nice thing is they include both the light and ball case.

We had it installed by a professional electrician so I don't about the ease of installing it yourself but he had no problems.

The fan is a good value. It is made well at a reasonable cost. Its clean lines work in our modern yet aclectic interior. It is quiet and easy to operate. We bought the remote and just have to find it from time to time! I am hoping it cuts down on the A/C this summer with the high cost of fuel.

I have noticed that the place is fresher smelling now that we can move the air.

Y lighting has great prices, is easy to order from, has a wonderful selection, ships quickly, packs well with no damage. What more can you ask for?

This fan is great. Love the way it looks with the brushed aluminum. It's very quiet at all fan speeds. At the 2 higher speeds though, it does wobble back & forth a tiny bit, but it's very secure in the ceiling and isn't going anywhere. The separate dimmer control that we bought is great, except it's odd that the "1" setting is full blast, "4" is the lowest speed, and "0" is off.

Clean modern lines. Looks amazing and works really well. Easy ordering. Quick free delivery. Clear assembly instructions with photos. It took me about an hour to assemble/install. Few tools required. Used the controller with the wired fan and remote light... very easy to wire myself and works really well. The light even dims.

My only small design complaint is that there is one screw head showing on each of the fan blades. It's minor, but possibly worth noting.

I'd love to order this same fan to replace all of the other fans in my house!

These fans are great. Very quiet, easy to assemble and install, and if you're looking for a sleek, unobtrusive look, the Ball fan is it. I bought 4 of them, and the only reason I gave them a 4 instead of a 5 is that the light globes on two of them arrived cracked. Ylighting gave me amazing customer service in that they shipped out replacements the morning after I reported the problem. Well done! They will look great in any modern, contemporary, or mid-century environment....better without the light kits, but I needed the light.

I recently purchased a new house and one of the first things I had to do was remove the two 20-year-old wood fans with brass trim from the living room. I saw the Modern Fan Company Ball fans and new right away they would be great in my living room. The installation instructions were very easy to following and I liked that the fan came with a few down rods, the longest of which fit my needs. The fans are gorgeous, quiet and a real attention getter. They are very modern without the overly industrial look of some other fans. In short they fit my KISS (keep it simple stupid) design style.
