Design by Omer Arbel.
Made in Vancouver, Canada by Bocci.

28 series is an exploration of fabrication process which is part of creative director, Omer Arbel's, quest for specificity in manufacturing. Instead of designing form itself, the intent for the 28 series was to design a system that produces form. Arbel developed a method that has loose parameters built into it, which produces a different shape in every iteration of the fabrication procedure. Thus, every 28 series piece made is formally different from any other in existence. Individual 28 series pendants result from complex glass blowing technique whereby air pressure is intermittently introduced into and then removed from a glass matrix (which is intermittently heated and then rapidly cooled). The result is a distorted spherical shape with a composed collection of inner shapes, one of which is made of opaque milk glass and houses a low voltage xenon lamp.

28 pendants are designed to cluster in hexagonal shapes which nestle into each other to create patterns as dictated by the needs of the interior. They maybe clustered or composed in an ambient manner similar to their distant cousins the 14's. Suitable for residential and commercial use. Popular applications include clusters over tables in dining rooms and restaurants, accessory lighting in living rooms, decorative lighting, linear configurations or clusters over bars and kitchen islands and large chandeliers in building lobbies and other public spaces, and tiling multiple chandeliers to create impactful installations in private or public spaces.

The glass is made with clear glass exterior spheres and milk white interior glass cavities and are suspended from braided metal coaxial cable. Powder coated rectangular white canopy houses the electronic transformers, see instructions for specific mounting requirements. The 28.16 is equipped with "Headphone jack" hardware, allowing the canopy to be mounted on its own, and then the preset length pendants can be individually "plugged in".

Pendants CANNOT be shortened in the field. When ordering please specify the longest height (10 feet max) and the shortest height. Heights are measured from the ceiling to the bottom of the diffuser. The remaining pendants will be at random heights between the maximum and the minimum.

Omer Arbel

Omer Arbel trained in the late 1990’s as an architect. He apprenticed under Enric, Miralles, John and Patricia Parkau and Peter Busby, among others; and was centrally involved in several successful high profile building projects and international design competitions.

In 2003, Arbel founded a multi-disciplinary design studio focused on blurring the boundaries between the fields of architecture, industrial design, manufacturing and materials research. This interdisciplinary approach was born of the necessities of building a sustainable and ambitious office in a context with little opportunity within the cultural periphery, but has since transformed into a structure uniquely positioned to explore the rich area of investigation in the overlap of these fields.

In 2005, Arbel became Bocci's creative director. His conceptual approach, now fueled by an infrastructure for prototyping, fine craft, manufacturing and distribution, has given birth to a collection of conceptually driven lighting, furniture, electrical accessories and objects, which have since gained significant presence and impact within the design community.

Accolades include several Red Dot and iF Awards, a Yellow Pencil Yearbook Entry, the Ron Thom Early Design Achievement Award, a World Architecture Festival Shortlist, with Corrine Hunt, the commission to design the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Medals, and most recently a major installation at the grand atrium of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
