George Nelson Bubble Lamps

A mid-century classic, the Bubble Lamp was first designed by George Nelson in 1947 and was produced by Howard Miller starting in the early 1950s and ending in 1979. Our supplier has reissued the Nelson Bubble Lamps to the original specifications, using the original Howard Miller tooling. These famous lamps are part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

George Nelson

When writing about the course of his remarkable 50-year career, George Nelson described a series of creative "zaps", or moments of out-of-the-blue inspiration "when the solitary individual finds he is connected with a reality he never dreamed of."

Nelson said that for a designer to deal creatively with human needs, "he must first make a radical, conscious break with all values he identifies as anti-human." Designers also must constantly be aware of the consequences of their actions on people and society. In fact, he declared that "total design is nothing more or less than a process of relating everything to everything." So he said that rather than specializing, designers must cultivate a broad base of knowledge and understanding.

Nelson did so as few are able, and, with the help of well-timed zaps, he helped define modern, humane design.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful shape; gives off a strong, soft light with a higher watt bulb. My wife and I love the modern look of this series. We put pendant "bubble cigar" lamps in our bedroom. I installed 100 watt bulbs, and we have almost all the light we need, both for reading and to generally fill the space. We do need an additional ceiling light, because we are in a loft, and have a fairly big bedroom. I love these for reading; we hung the lights fairly high to fill the space and I just pull the light down closer to where I'm reading at night. No screws or instructions for installing the light came with the product. Still, installation was fairly easy--we put them right into our dry wall with four screws and mollies from the Home Depot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love our bubble sconces! Highly recommend this lamp. We purchased two of these for either side of our bed, and love them. The are beautiful to look at, and are interesting enough that the wall doesn't need anything else. The light they give out is warm and cozy. The feel of the on/off pull-chain is really nice. The other thing that's nice about these is that the swivel back and forth - you can pull them closer towards the bed if needed. The photos don't do these lamps justice - they are simply gorgeous. Also, we received wonderful customer service from Y Lighting. One of the lamps came damaged (don't know how as they were packed so nicely in the box) but Y Lighting quickly replaced it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Beautiful, but heavy! A lovely look for our library, and essential as there is no overhead lighting and these provide the right ambience. However, there is a large and very heavy transformer in the cord, high enough up that it's visible on the wall. None of the picures or descriptions show this which is why I'm writing this review. Also, I bought two of these to hang as a pair, but the transformers are different heights on the cord, which means the symmetry I wanted isn't possible. Rather poor that this isn't standardized.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful but... They look amazing but they smell. They smell so bad. It's slowly going away but we had them for over 2 weeks and the smell is still there. It's noted somewhere on the site but beware that even in winter you keep your windows open to keep the gag reflex at bay.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A modern classic that's easy to install The George Nelson lamps are classics by an American master. The Wall sconce is easy to install since no ceiling junction box is required. My small study has a ceiling of only 7 feet, so ceiling mounted fixtures are not possible for general lighting. Mounting this fixture on the wall gives good light for the small room and plugs into an existing receptacle. (It needs to be installed into a stud, but there is still good flexibility in placement since the fixture swivels left and right.) Installation tips: remove the metal swivel tube entirely from the wall bracket before attaching the wooden bracket to the wall. Don't try to install screws into the wall while the tube is in place; you'll damage the cord. And be sure you leave enough room above the bracket for re-insertion of the tube.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A plug in Bubble lamp!! Wow!! I am thrilled that I can get the look of the George Nelson Bubble light without having to hard wire. I used them above master bedroom nightstands and love them. The only reason I give 4 stars is because the transformer that is on the cord is way too close to the light and shows on the wall. It should be mounted lower on the cord nearer to the plug so it hides. Also, the walnut wall bracket should be longer so you don't see so much of the big, white cord.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but some reservations All of the Nelson lamps are great and this has the added benefit of not needing any hard wiring- however the design for mounting on the wall is a bit odd. It's quite difficult to screw in, because you need to attach the screws while being very careful to avoid the power cord--- I found that to be rather strange. I think they might want to consider smaller screws or different type screws so this is less of an issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect solution for small space, excellent packaging This sconce was the perfect solution for replacing a large floor lamp next to our sofa and opening up more floor space in our small Chicago home. I was a bit nervous about having the piece shipped but it is maliciously packaged and arrived in perfect condition. The style is perfect for our transitional/eclectic decor - in fact, I am considering buying a second one for the other side of the sofa!

I have what I believe to be one of the original hanging Cigar lamps from Howard Miller Clock Co, and I would like to make it the adjustable wall sconce style. Is it possible to purchase the wall sconce part without the lamp? Thank you.

Asked by: Jeannemarie
Certainly, this is something our parts department would be happy to look into for you.
