Design by George Nelson, 1947. Without question, the George Nelson Bubble Lamp® Lantern Pendant is a tried-and-true standard of the modern vocabulary. George Nelson designed the first lamps in 1947. These lamps, with their simple sculptural shapes, are constructed of an innovative taut plastic that coats a steel wire-frame. Nelson's unique design and ingenious use of materials prove to eliminate glare and provide an abundant, yet diffused light. A quality which alone is unique to this material. From the forming of the wire-frame, to the spraying of the vinyl form, one-by-one, each Bubble Lamp is constructed to last decades and each Bubble Lamp is built to George Nelson’s original specifications. These famous lamps are part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Brushed nickel canopy. Each pendant comes with 6 feet of wire that can be field shortened. Instruction Sheet 1 George NelsonWhen writing about the course of his remarkable 50-year career, George Nelson described a series of creative "zaps" — moments of out-of-the-blue inspiration "when the solitary individual finds he is connected with a reality he never dreamed of." Nelson said that for a designer to deal creatively with human needs, "he must first make a radical, conscious break with all values he identifies as anti-human." Designers also must constantly be aware of the consequences of their actions on people and society. In fact, he declared that "total design is nothing more or less than a process of relating everything to everything." So he said that rather than specializing, designers must cultivate a broad base of knowledge and understanding. Nelson did so as few are able, and, with the help of well-timed zaps, he helped define modern, humane design. Nelson Bubble LampsA mid-century classic, the Bubble Lamp was first designed by George Nelson in 1947 and was produced by Howard Miller starting in the early 1950s and ending in 1979. The supplier has reissued the Nelson Bubble Lamps to the original specifications, using the original Howard Miller tooling. These famous lamps are part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Customer ReviewsHighest quality, beautiful piece We ordered the Lantern Nelson pendant in small to go over our nightstands. We both have a design background and are very picky about lights. This one does not disappoint. Although it's not the popular Saucer model, it's still very Nelson-esque and gives a similar vibe. The material is somewhat malleable - it's fabric so it's not a hard plastic. I know it can be hard to tell if you've never seen it in person. The bottom of the light has a shiny chrome ring. It's packed quite well in the box. The box does say YLighting on the outside and Nelson lamp with an image, so it might not be safe to receive delivery in an environment where thievery might be an issue. The only con is that the suspension wire is not entirely straight out of the box, so it might take time for gravity to work it out into a straight line. Would I buy it again? Of course! By: Susan E., Designer (Scottsdale, AZ) Reminiscent of traditional Asian lanterns We like this light because of its Asian-like feel in our Japanese influenced decorated home. We installed it in our entryway and it matches the similar George Nelson light above our dining room table. (full disclosure... I am filling out this review because Y-Lighting offered me a $25 gift certificate for additional purchases) By: Jasper, Homeowner (Colorado) Love it! We have Nelson Bubble Lamps installed in our office reception area and loved them so much, we decided to get some for our dining area. We are so excited! By: Shirley L., Homeowner (Seattle) The Perfect Product! We have a narrow room that needed a light fixture, so we decided to try the Lantern. Looks great, puts out a surprising amount of light with a 100 watt bulb. Lamp was packed very well, super quick delivery from Y Lighting. Thanks YLighting! By: John L., Homeowner (Grand Haven, MI) very nice fixture Well made, easy to install, diffuses light nicely. And even though it's open on the bottom, you can't see the bulb (which drives me crazy). One thing about this light: in the photo it looked more chinese lantern-- we still love it, but now that it's hung, we jokingly refer to it as "the air filter." By: madisoncat, Designer (NYC) Love this fixture The original fixture was damaged upon arrival but Ylighting handled it quickly and painlessly. I received a replacement within a few days. The fixture sits in an awkward narrow stairway leading to a loft space. It adds a bit of interest without overpowering the small space. I love it. By: Leslie R., Homeowner (Parker, Colorado) Simple yet elegant and tres chic! These modern beauties arrived within a week of my ordering them. I hung one over each of my nightstands and they give the room a fresh and modern look, especially paired with my very traditional bed frame. I love the diffuse light they emit...perfect to read by!
