George Nelson

When writing about the course of his remarkable 50-year career, George Nelson described a series of creative "zaps" — moments of out-of-the-blue inspiration "when the solitary individual finds he is connected with a reality he never dreamed of."

Nelson said that for a designer to deal creatively with human needs, "he must first make a radical, conscious break with all values he identifies as anti-human." Designers also must constantly be aware of the consequences of their actions on people and society. In fact, he declared that "total design is nothing more or less than a process of relating everything to everything." So he said that rather than specializing, designers must cultivate a broad base of knowledge and understanding.

Nelson did so as few are able, and, with the help of well-timed zaps, he helped define modern, humane design.

beautiful lamp, classic design

This beautiful ceiling lamp is a modern design icon that truly stands the test of time. I ordered the medium size to replace the light fixture in my dining room. It provides a wonderful diffused light. I prefer a lot of light so I use a soft white CFL GE reveal bulb 100 watt replacement and it looks beautiful and makes the colors of everything else in the room look flattering.

Beautiful Nelson Saucer Lamp

I read all the great reviews on this beautiful Nelson Saucer Lamp. I purchased the lamp as an open box and it arrived promptly. However, when I opened the box, there was some damage to the lamp. It looks like UPS did not handle the box properly since after opening, it looks like the box was kicked in and that pushed one of the wires in the lamp up. Y lighting is replacing the lamp right now. Should arrive either today or tomorrow. Great customer service. The lamp is beautiful and as other reviewers stated a quality product. We'll see how it looks after it is hung up.

I purchased the medium one for our small bedroom inside a victorian apartment in San Francisco. It was perfect for the room. Highly recommended!

Nelson Medium Saucer Lamp

Just had the Nelson medium saucer lamp hung up in our living room and it is beautiful. Quality is great and perfect size for the dining room. We used a 100 watt bulb and I'm not sure it bright enough. It is a very contemporary to modern design.
