Castor Design

Castor is interested in the middle ground between art and design. The use, reuse, and re-contextualization of materials are important aspects of Castor's design practice and aesthetic: burned out bulbs are transformed into chandeliers and overhead lights; rusty shipping containers are used to create mobile saunas; and "deadstock" components are given new life as part of a contemporary line of furniture and lighting.

Established in 2006, Castor Design has worked on numerous interior projects; created custom lighting and furniture designs; completed public art commissions; and launched a diverse range of products available throughout North America, Europe, Japan, and Hong Kong. The background of Castor's founders - Kei Ng and Brian Richer, born in Malaysia and Canada respectively - is similarly varied, and includes architecture, stone carving, and set design. Their experience in restaurant design and ownership - combined with their love of food and music - inspired them to open Parts & Labour Toronto, a space that combines a fine dining room with a punk rock venue.
