Design by Castor, 2012.
Made in Canada by Castor Design.

The Deadstock series was inspired when Castor found stock of unused steel components in a defunct factory in Toronto. The old lamp parts were discovered in dust-covered boxes that had not been touched in 30 years. The series of lights has the trademark industrial edge combined with the quality of refined innovative design. Each product combines simple movement within the parts to provide options for angle of light, look and use. By re-interpreting the definition of the parts, adding new materials and techniques they create a new story for each product.

The Deadstock Collection Catherine table lamp is designed around a cylindrical shade salvaged from a defunct lighting factory. The base is made from Carrara marble salvaged from First Canadian Place and the support is made of precisely machined brass.

Table lamp for direct illumination. Brass support, gunmetal finish shade. Includes in-line dimmer.

Castor Design

Established in 2006, Castor is Brian Richer, a trained architectural stone carver with a degree in English literature, and Kei Ng, a trained architect with a background in set design. Castor's work has been described as a cross between Guy Maddin and Larry Clark with a side of Stompin' Tom Connors. They are interested in the middle ground between high design and ribald yokelism. Materials and reuse of materials is also an important part of Castor's aesthetic. Burnt out bulbs to make lighting, a rusty shipping container to make a sauna - this re-contextualization of materials is a primary design consideration for Castor.

Unfortunate flaw

There is a clear plastic piece that sticks out of the cord where the cord meets the shade. It is not visible online, but it is quite visible in person. The plastic is threaded as if it should have a screw on it, but I checked with customer service and this is how it is. This is so unfortunate! Otherwise, this is a lovely piece.

The product itself is probably ok, but it was shipped to the wrong address, second time this has happened with my orders.
