I got the plug-in version as I am renting. The cord is not your regular plastic but a braided white fabric around the cord. The lamp looks really cool when it's lit in the retracted position, just a mood light and the extended reading feature works well and gives a bright light. The knob on the face of the lamp is a dimmer which is nice. The light itself is in a spiky star shaped metal casing and the "bulb" appears to be just a painted dot so I'm not sure what's up with that. The extended arm is just slightly awkward but you can aim it pretty well and it casts a large ring of bright light. I love this lamp but I do feel the price is a bit high. But every feature of the construction is high quality and it's obviously not a mass-produced item. I'm not rich but this is the reading light i've been searching for my whole (nightly reading) life.
