It is white when turned off and when on it has subtle earthy tones. The smaller options, which is what I got works well for light layering, that is if you will be having other light sources. I don't recommend this light as a single light source to light your room, since it using a fluorescent light bulb. Fluorescent, light gives off green, harsh and unpleasant light.
