Architect Gio Ponti founded FontanaArte in 1932 as an artistic division of the Luigi Fontana Company. Historically, the company has been a leader in advanced glass manufacturing and design. The company's works were first distinguished by its realization of artistic stained-glass windows, many of which are today still functional elements and ornamental features of churches and cathedrals, among them the Duomo of Milan and the Cathedral of Brasilia. By using glass, Ponti realized what an enormous potential this material could offer in the in the making of furnishing complements for interiors, and he started to design and produce furniture, lamps and objects with glass as the main distinguishing feature. Soon a new collection was ready to be marketed, and his new design concept was being used as a complement to the interior decoration of many houses that he personally designed. Over the years, FontanaArte has had many contributors to its designs, including Pietro Chiesa, Gae Aulenti, Pierluigi Cerri, Piero Castiglioni, Vico Magistretti, Vittorio Gregotti, Ettore Sottsass, Umberto Riva, Alvaro Siza and Renzo Piano.

this is a great lighting fixture

this is a great lighting fixture for illuminating large spaces. the pirellone comprises 2 6' curved glass panes that diffused direct light in all directions. the pirellone has a vertical center column to which is attached of 5 pairs of 50W halogen bulbs. at the top of the center column is a 300W halogen bulb. the 300W halogen provides indirect light and has a rotatable reflector that allows you to direct the light over a range of angles. the pirellone uses a relco rondo 4f dimmer switch such that the 10 50W bulbs are dimmable and the 300W halogen is switchable on/off.

the pirellone emits beautiful illumination. mine is located in a fairly large room with a vaulted ceiling and even when it is the only light source it emits a usable level of light for reading. even still, it is pleasant to look directly at the fixture when fully illuminated.

i'm not so sure that i would recommend this fixture for a small area, while it does have a dimmer and you can drop the overall light level, color temperature drops considerably when you reduce the voltage delivered to the 50W halogen bulbs.

this is a very expensive lighting fixture. i appreciate lighting fixtures as art/furniture and prefer a better looking fixture to one that is not as nice looking, but i ultimately use the lighting fixture to provide illumination. my observation is that the pirellone is a rather unique lighting fixture in that it combines aesthetics and function to produce a lighting fixture that is both beautiful illumination and provides high light output - a rare combination in my opinion.

on a cautionary note, one thing that i have learned is that european lighting makers can be very difficult to deal with from a customer service standpoint. the pirellone that i received was defective and fontana arte was quite difficult to deal with in getting the defect addressed. my advice to anyone wanting to buy from such manufacturers is make sure that you are dealing with a retailer that knows what they are doing because if you have any difficulties with the fixture, you will have to rely on the retailer's skill to get a good resolution. in my opinion, the people at ylighting know what they are doing and know how to get things done; they worked hard to see to it that the fixture was repaired and put into proper working order.
