Architect Gio Ponti founded FontanaArte in 1932 as an artistic division of the Luigi Fontana Company. Historically, the company has been a leader in advanced glass manufacturing and design. The company's works were first distinguished by its realization of artistic stained-glass windows, many of which are today still functional elements and ornamental features of churches and cathedrals, among them the Duomo of Milan and the Cathedral of Brasilia. By using glass, Ponti realized what an enormous potential this material could offer in the in the making of furnishing complements for interiors, and he started to design and produce furniture, lamps and objects with glass as the main distinguishing feature. Soon a new collection was ready to be marketed, and his new design concept was being used as a complement to the interior decoration of many houses that he personally designed. Over the years, FontanaArte has had many contributors to its designs, including Pietro Chiesa, Gae Aulenti, Pierluigi Cerri, Piero Castiglioni, Vico Magistretti, Vittorio Gregotti, Ettore Sottsass, Umberto Riva, Alvaro Siza and Renzo Piano.

Diffused Light Clean & Simple

I selected two of these fixtures for a high ceiling over a kitchen island. The pendants provide ambient lighting in the room while providing direct light over the preparation sections of the lighting. On a dimmer its pleasing at all light levels.

Sturdy and great looking drum share.

I initially though this drum shade was made from of a thin shade material and would be light weight. In fact this shade is made of solid plastic and is quite study and heavy. Good support with steel cable. The connection to the ceiling features a somewhat obtrusive chrome cone shaped cover, unfortunately necessary to cover the hanging hardware. Inside the shade there is a chrome plated plate which does a great job of reflecting light back downward. I installed 3 of these fixtures in close proximity over the kitchen island and they really add a lot to the room. I found the price to be a little high but well worth the look. Getting all three fixtures to be totally level with each other took quite a bit of time and tweaking (I did the installation myself which was not difficult just time consuming if trying to align more than one fixture.)
