He began his architecture studies at the Polytechnic of Milan, where he graduated from in 1969. After working for numerous magazines he has worked as the art director and consultant for the image of the glass factory Murano Barovier & Toso since 2001. Additionally, he teaches at the ISIA of Florence. His career has spanned a large variety of designs, including buildings, installations, exhibitions, lighting, books, scenery, objects and environments. FontanaArteArchitect Gio Ponti founded FontanaArte in 1932 as an artistic division of the Luigi Fontana Company. Historically, the company has been a leader in advanced glass manufacturing and design. The company's works were first distinguished by its realization of artistic stained-glass windows, many of which are today still functional elements and ornamental features of churches and cathedrals, among them the Duomo of Milan and the Cathedral of Brasilia. By using glass, Ponti realized what an enormous potential this material could offer in the in the making of furnishing complements for interiors, and he started to design and produce furniture, lamps and objects with glass as the main distinguishing feature. Soon a new collection was ready to be marketed, and his new design concept was being used as a complement to the interior decoration of many houses that he personally designed. Over the years, FontanaArte has had many contributors to its designs, including Pietro Chiesa, Gae Aulenti, Pierluigi Cerri, Piero Castiglioni, Vico Magistretti, Vittorio Gregotti, Ettore Sottsass, Umberto Riva, Alvaro Siza and Renzo Piano. Customer Reviewslove it love the design. have 2 concerns. the bulb does let off a shadow effect on the ceiling but may go away w/different bulb. second, the whole unit that holds the bulb tend to get off center. needs some readjustment occasionally. not sure if it got bumped and thats why it moved. overall great design, clean, classic light. By: Bali M., Homeowner (New York City) I like the clean and simple understated design Glass shades usually allow light to shine in all directions, but I didn't realize when I purchased these online that 100% of the light is channeled down. I used three of these over a kitchen island, and while these make for fine task lighting, the ceiling above remains pretty dark. Still, they are beautiful fixtures, and no one notices the dark ceiling but me.
