Design by David Chipperfield, 2005.
Imported from Italy.

By FontanaArte.

Series of recessed lamps for walls or ceilings providing indirect lighting. The fixture has a structure in metal which houses one or more fluorescent lamps. Slot is characterized by its ease of mounting and maintenance thanks to its cover held in position by neodyium magnets.

The starkness of the design allows a luminous effect similar to a knife-cut of light in the wall.

This makes Slot a very special product which is suitable for private and public spaces where, apart from illumination, a non-invasive decorative effect is required. Available in 4 sizes. Fixture includes housing.

Notes: Fixtures are made to order in Italy and have an approximate 8 to 10 week lead time, returns will not be accepted on these items.

Architect Gio Ponti founded FontanaArte in 1932 as an artistic division of the Luigi Fontana Company. Historically, the company has been a leader in advanced glass manufacturing and design. The company's works were first distinguished by its realization of artistic stained-glass windows, many of which are today still functional elements and ornamental features of churches and cathedrals, among them the Duomo of Milan and the Cathedral of Brasilia. By using glass, Ponti realized what an enormous potential this material could offer in the in the making of furnishing complements for interiors, and he started to design and produce furniture, lamps and objects with glass as the main distinguishing feature. Soon a new collection was ready to be marketed, and his new design concept was being used as a complement to the interior decoration of many houses that he personally designed. Over the years, FontanaArte has had many contributors to its designs, including Pietro Chiesa, Gae Aulenti, Pierluigi Cerri, Piero Castiglioni, Vico Magistretti, Vittorio Gregotti, Ettore Sottsass, Umberto Riva, Alvaro Siza and Renzo Piano.

Killer If You Install Them Correctly

I have installed 7 of these in a new home, three of the very large ones in a hallway and four in bathrooms. They are extremely cool but must be installed with special attention to detail around the edges. For help, please contact Dyna Contracting in Seattle, WA or check out my construction blog at sixinthecity dot net

You won't be able to find additional pictures anywhere on the internet, I looked. I have good shots and they are really quite marvelous when installed correctly. Good luck!

Quality not what expected for this price.

The slots provide a good light and there is nothing else on the market like them. However, the plastic that goes over the opening is very cheap looking, and doesn't mask the mechanics of the light. The contractor also had a very difficult time installing. The quality is not what I expected for the price.
