The Birdie has been a great choice for ambient as well as task lighting in my living room, with quite bright light at the highest setting and the ability to dim by tapping the end of the "perch" portion of the lamp, which is kind of fun. While the polycarbonate shade and white-lacquered metal stem make it very modern, the shape is actually quite classic, making it a great choice for many types of decor. The lamp is also quite sturdy, with a heavy metal base that attaches with screws. The shade has a shiny glass-like finish and looks very high-quality. When the light is on it has a pleasant warmth and looks more off-white, although the lamp is a bright white when off. Note that 1) because the stem of the lamp is one complete piece, it comes in a HUGE box; 2) the light bulb is not included and is a bit hard to find.
