Design by George Nelson, 1947.
Handcrafted in Michigan, U.S.A. by Modernica.

Without question, the George Nelson Bubble Lamp Propeller Pendant is a tried-and-true standard of the modern vocabulary. George Nelson designed the first lamps in 1947. These lamps, with their simple sculptural shapes, are constructed of an innovative taut plastic that coats a steel wire-frame. Nelson's unique design and ingenious use of materials prove to eliminate glare and provide an abundant, yet diffused light. A quality which alone is unique to this material.

From the forming of the wire-frame, to the spraying of the vinyl form, one-by-one, each Bubble Lamp is constructed to last decades and each Bubble Lamp is built to George Nelson's original specifications. These famous lamps are part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

George Nelson Bubble Lamps

A mid-century classic, the Bubble Lamp was first designed by George Nelson in 1947 and was produced by Howard Miller starting in the early 1950s and ending in 1979. Our supplier has reissued the Nelson Bubble Lamps to the original specifications, using the original Howard Miller tooling. These famous lamps are part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

George Nelson

When writing about the course of his remarkable 50-year career, George Nelson described a series of creative "zaps", or moments of out-of-the-blue inspiration "when the solitary individual finds he is connected with a reality he never dreamed of."

Nelson said that for a designer to deal creatively with human needs, "he must first make a radical, conscious break with all values he identifies as anti-human." Designers also must constantly be aware of the consequences of their actions on people and society. In fact, he declared that "total design is nothing more or less than a process of relating everything to everything." So he said that rather than specializing, designers must cultivate a broad base of knowledge and understanding.

Nelson did so as few are able, and, with the help of well-timed zaps, he helped define modern, humane design.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love it. I have traditional furniture in a modern building and this pendant lamp is perfect. Ties it all together in it's subtle and sophisticated shape and size. Also has a beautiful glow when on at night.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Illuminates the Senses My aesthetic is mildly modern, I own a few popular mid-century pieces such as the Eames lounge, a case study rocker and tulip table. I find that these pieces are timeless and mix well with just about any interior design, they are not strictly for modern interiors. I've now added the George Nelson Propeller lamp in my kitchen dining nook right over my tulip table, I'm pleased to report it looks awesome. The lamp has a beautiful glow with my white light CFL and catches the eye even unlit during the day. It truly is a fascinating piece, so much so my wife who doesn't care much for modern design insisted on ordering another one ( CC Saucer - also a wonderful eye catcher). To add to this, I would imagine like myself most buyers are going to wonder if this item is worth the cost. That's a legitimate question, the lamp is wonderful, does it look like it costs $300+... I'm not going to lie, someone uninformed will probably ask if you got it at Ikea. That being said its very well constructed and I like that its made in Michigan just like they made them over 60 years ago. For me I appreciate the design and detail that Modernica has put into the George Nelson lamps, so I have no regret about paying what I did since it brings a positive feeling when ever I view it. Installation took about 30 minutes with removal of my old lamp, very easy compared to some other lamp installations that I have done over the years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unique Nelson lamp, puts out great light! We have several saucer and cigar shaped lamps, and we love them! But we decided to try the more unique Propeller for a bedroom. Lamp arrived to us on time and in perfect condition. Packaging for all Bubble lamps we have bought is excellent. We installed it using a 150 watt bulb and dimmer switch. Perfect for our room! The George Nelson Bubble Lamps are well made, not a cheap knockoff. A timeless product that will last many years, we will not get tired of it.

Could this pendant be used in a bathroom?  I am weary of fabric being in a damp setting and not sure what kind of fabric this is.  Thanks!

Asked by: Russ55
Hi there! They are constructed out of a plastic coating that is similar to the fibrous nature of fiber glass. The plastic coating is meant to mimic the look and feel of the paper that is traditionally used for the style lanterns that inspired the design of this fixture. It is water resistant, and can easily be cleaned with a soft damp cloth, and then should be immediately dried. This is not suitable for damp or wet environments as they are not damp rated and recommended for dry indoor areas only. To discuss this fixture in greater depth, or to follow up with anything else, feel free to give us a call anytime at 866.842.6209 and we are more than happy to go over some options with you.
