Design by George Nelson, 1947.
Handcrafted in Michigan, U.S.A. by Modernica.

Without question, the George Nelson Bubble Lamp Saucer Pendant is a tried-and-true standard of the modern vocabulary. George Nelson designed the first lamps in 1947. These lamps, with their simple sculptural shapes, are constructed of an innovative taut plastic that coats a steel wire-frame. Nelson's unique design and ingenious use of materials prove to eliminate glare and provide an abundant, yet diffused light. A quality which alone is unique to this material.

From the forming of the wire-frame, to the spraying of the vinyl form, one-by-one, each Bubble Lamp is constructed to last decades and each Bubble Lamp is built to George Nelson's original specifications. These famous lamps are part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

George Nelson

When writing about the course of his remarkable 50-year career, George Nelson described a series of creative "zaps", or moments of out-of-the-blue inspiration "when the solitary individual finds he is connected with a reality he never dreamed of."

Nelson said that for a designer to deal creatively with human needs, "he must first make a radical, conscious break with all values he identifies as anti-human." Designers also must constantly be aware of the consequences of their actions on people and society. In fact, he declared that "total design is nothing more or less than a process of relating everything to everything." So he said that rather than specializing, designers must cultivate a broad base of knowledge and understanding.

Nelson did so as few are able, and, with the help of well-timed zaps, he helped define modern, humane design.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These Lights are Lovely Third Nelson pendant I have bought. One is an original (slightly yellow; ball lamp), one had a smudge and was discounted (still lovely; crisscross pear), and now the saucer. I haven't hung it up yet, but it is perfect condition and will look amazing once I actually have enough time to hang it up (hooray for Thanksgiving break as a teacher). They give off a marvelous glow and look modern even though the design is much older than I.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautifully made A perfect reproduction of the saucer lamp. We saw an original one in a local vintage shop & this one looks even better because it's not faded. Very well made of some type of fabric (?). Looks lovely in our dining room above a copy of the Knoll white tulip table..

Are the saucer lamps sturdy? Is the plastic covering quite thick? Do you ship free to australia? Thanks

Asked by: Vicki
These saucer lamps have sturdy hardware, but are lightweight enough for quick installation. They are some of our highest rated products. Unfortunately, due to the contractual relationships that we maintain with our vendors, we are unable to ship anywhere outside of the US and Canada. We apologize for the inconvenience. We hope you are able to find a local retailer that carries this line, because they really are great fixtures! Thanks for contacting us. Parin YLighting Customer Service

How wide is the hole opening at the bottom of the lamp (for the small size)...and is this the same for small, med & large?

Asked by: Itchyku
Hey there Itchyku! The hole opening is the same for all sizes of the George Nelson BUB Saucer Lamps from Modernica. It has a diameter of 3-3/4" creating a focused spot light and still allowing the saucer to evenly diffuse the light for the general space. Thanks for reaching out! YLighting Customer Service

Does the hang down cord come in longer lengths if needed?

Asked by: Harleyfxrs
Hi there. Absolutely, this pendant can be ordered with longer lengths. That would be a custom invoice and would be handled through our Sales team over the phone, who would communicate with the manufacturer directly for pricing and lead time. Is the light pure white?  One photo looks like it's cream color.

Asked by: Sparkey
This fixture requires a very standard E26 incandescent medium base bulb, which is common to find in any home department store and can be purchased along a whole spectrum of color temperatures. The bulb is not included, leaving the decision up to you regarding whether you would prefer a cool or a warm white. The shade itself is a pure white and not an off-white. Should you require some additional clarification beyond this and would like to speak to a product specialist directly, feel free to give us a call anytime at 866.842.6209 and we can assist you. Is this price the American price and do you ship to Canada?

Asked by: Kenya
Yes the price is in US dollars and we do ship to Canada. International shipping and tax rates do apply, and because we have to route all Canadian orders through our warehouse in Virginia, the delivery process can be extended a bit. Be advised that we cannot accept international returns, unless of course something arrives damaged. what kind of light does this give off? is it concentrated through the center bulb hole at the bottom?

Asked by: kiplinger
This fixture does provide a significant amount of light, but it is not directional light with a concentrated beam focused in one direction, as would be the case with task lighting. Rather, the light emanates out from the center of the fixture and provides a substantial glow from all around, especially the larger size with the higher wattage. Should you require some additional clarification beyond this and would like to speak to a product specialist directly, feel free to give us a call anytime at 866.842.6209 and we can assist you.
