Three primary metals are use in Hinkley Outdoor lighting, including solid brass, aluminum, and steel. Variations exist in alloy content, gauge and treatment of these compounds and alloy grades offer endless outcomes.
Cast aluminum fixtures are more durable as they are made of raw aluminum with no supplemental material in the cast. Cast aluminum is not recommended for coastal use, but will have a longer life in normal climates. There are two basic methods of casting aluminum: die casting and sand casting, die casting is considered superior and yields more precise details.
Solid aluminum fixtures are the most durable of the aluminum processes. Solid aluminum fixtures tend to fare better in coastal applications as there is no corrosion, though the finish will fade or flake off if a powder coating has been applied.
Solid brass fixtures will not deteriorate at coastal applications and are suitable for most applications. The makeup of the lacquer coatings vary depending on where the fixture is manufactured, but once the lacquer has dissolved, the fixture will usually darken over time.
