Ingo Maurer

Ingo Maurer, the son of a fisherman, was born May 12, 1932 on the island Reichenau in Lake of Constance, Germany. He trained as a typo-grapher in Germany and Switzerland and later went on to study graphic design (1954 to 1958). In 1960 Maurer left Germany for the United States, where he worked in New York and San Francisco as a freelance graphic designer. During this time he developed a genuine love for New York City and the feeling that "All things were possible" there. In 1963, Maurer moved back to Germany and founded Design M where he was able to develop and manufacture lamps after his own designs. One of his first designs, Bulb (1966), was inspired after a night out and later looking at a bare-bulb fixture in the ceiling. The Edison bulb has a special quality, its shape was simple yet most beautiful. The Bulb was the first of many homages to the Edison bulb, an object that Ingo Maurer holds in high regard. Bulb, along with many of his works, is included in the design collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Many of his designs are based on the fascination of banal things, ordinary objects that are seen every day and no longer noticed. He takes them out of their context and celebrates them.

Ingo Maurer has been designing and creating award-winnning lighting works for over forty years. His love of the incandescent lamp has not stopped him from trying all the new lighting technologies. His lighting toolbox is filled with high-tech and low-tech, exotic and ordinary things, with useful and useless techniques, with lighting punch and gentle shimmer, with Aah and Argh.... All resulting in works of art that are also fully functional and well-engineered lighting pieces.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An absolutely fabulous piece of sculpture, and a practical light This is an absolutely fabulous lamp in so many ways. Not only does it give off a lot of light and is functional, but it also is a piece of interactive sculpture. It is something that becomes yours since the owner must decide what and how to hang things. You can hang photos, artwork from the kids, clippings, ... You can also decide how wild or controlled you want it to look depending on what and how you hang things.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a work of art hanging from your ceiling This is a beautiful fixture. It gives off a diffuse light. There is a bit of time involved in assembling it how you want. This is also the great part as you can make it as you want. Rarely goes unnoticed by visitors and it makes me smile everyday. Unique, graceful and fun. Bravo Mr. Maurer

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is such a fun, creative, beautiful light! I love this light. It makes me happy every time I look at it. It isn't for everyone, because you need to put it together yourself and "create" your own design. It gives off nice light and you can put as many or as little of the paper pieces in as you want. Definitely a conversation piece!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful, great price for great design We wanted a sculptural focal point for newly renovated offices of a high end venture capitalist firm. We had a sculptor work with the fixture to customize our Zettel for the space. The end result is beautiful and feels like a one-of-a kind glowing sculpture made jsut for this space.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful and Unique I was looking for a statement chandelier - this light is just that. Everyone loves to read the notes and is mesmerized by the feeling the art/sculpture/light evokes. Easy to install and really fun to create the mobile! I love it!

can I change the papers to other things? for example, photos, postcards? as long as they are not heavy items and balance the light?

Asked by: sccorey33
Thanks for your interest in this design. You can certainly use postcards or other documents of a heavier card stock material if you prefer. In fact using documents and memorabilia of different sizes and weights only adds to the highly customizable nature of the design and personal experience. Just avoid using actual heavy objects, because doing so will throw off the carefully balanced weight distribution and might even damage the fragile metal arms. Also, station heavier materials toward the bottom of the fixture because those items will pull the arms down a bit.
