It's easy to direct the light, so as not to bother a sleeping partner. Easy to read by. because of it's solid base, no fear that it's going to topple over in an earthquake, and it's low setting is... sort of a great mood enhancer. A very weighty base and stand are quite secure. Don't be put off by flexibility of two telescoping rods that hold lamp head. This allows you to point the light around - to the wall. By adjusting the head, the arm and the base you can point the light anywhere. Switch has two levels. Would prefer it on the ball rather than the cord but understand why it was done this way.
