Poul Henningsen

Poul Henningsen was born in Copenhagen to the famous Danish actress Agnes Henningsen. He never graduated as an architect, but studied at The Technical School at Frederiksberg, Denmark from 1911-14, and then at Technical College in Copenhagen from 1914-17.

He started practicing traditional functionalistic architecture, but over the years his professional interests changed to focus mainly on lighting. He also expanded his field of occupation into areas of writing, becoming a journalist and an author. For a short period at the beginning of WWII, he was the head architect of the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. But like many other creative people, he was forced to flee Denmark during the German occupation but soon became a vital part of the Danish colony of artists living in Sweden.

His lifelong collaboration with Louis Poulsen Lighting began in 1925 and lasted until his death. To this day, Louis Poulsen Lighting still benefits from his genius. Poul Henningsen was also the first editor of the company magazine "NYT". The CEO of Louis Poulsen at the time, Sophus Kaastrup-Olsen, gave the magazine to PH as a gift because he had been terminated from the Danish newspaper he worked for (his opinions were too radical).

Poul Henningsen's pioneering work concerning the relations between light structures, shadows, glare, and color reproduction—compared to man's need for light remains the foundation of the lighting theories still practiced by Louis Poulsen Lighting.

Sale Louis Poulsen

Louis Poulsen's approach to architectural development began with its collaboration with famous and well respected lighting designers, like Poul Henningsen. Together they created a lighting and product philosophy encompassed by the words "function", "comfort" and "ambience". This philosophy continues to influence simple and functional product design, which focuses on well-being and the perception of artificial light, which leads to the creation of unique lighting environments. Louis Poulsen's approach to lighting lies in a very strict and uncompromising product philosophy grounded in simplicity. All elements must serve a light-related purpose. The result is a product line that displays simple and discreet designs ideally suited to all types of architecture across cultural styles.

This is a beautiful lighting fixture!

This lighting fixture is perfect! It is mid-century at its best. The design is simple, yet profound. The fixture is very light in weight, and it seems to float in the air making a beautiful statement without overpowering. The design allows light to filter out of the fixture without the bulb being seen from any angle - comfortable, beautiful lighting!

simple and elegant

This is a somewhat understated lamp that looks great without being too much of a statement.

Great design, creates a look and pulls the room together.

Love the way this light looks in our mid-century kitchen, The crushed chrome works very well against our brushed nickel pulls and hardware. What's better than the way it looks is how it functions. The light is remarkably diffuse and even, you can stand under it and never feel like you are in a spotlight, yet the light is very adequate to a 10 X 10 areas (we are adding a second one because we love it and the space does need at least 2 different sources). Let's face it, lighting is tough, and there are millions of bad lighting choices out there, that's why we love the PH.

Love it!

It's exactly like the picture. Solid. Packaged well. Am using it in my updated kitchen over an island. Only problem, at first they sent me the wrong light. But, customer service was easy to work with and I recieved the correct light without a problem.

Excellent and very beutiful.

The lamp works very well. I installed it above a dinning table, but i felt that the orange cover below the bulb reduced the light too much, so I did not use it.

Great, fantastic product and service, would defintely buy again.

Like the scale of the light, small and subtle. Some info on what the ceiling canopy looks like would be good for future purchases though.

Classic, elegant modern styling, beautiful functional light fixture.

I was a little concerned that it would provide enough light, rated for 100W and just under 16 in wide, but it efficiently focuses the light nicely downward. A very handsome light fixture.

Six stars...perfect light and classic design!

The Poulsen PH4/3 fixture is over our Aalto kitchen table and the PH5 is over our dining room table. Both provide the perfect amount of light and make a modern classic design statement. In fact, we have used both in all the homes we have owned and when they were sold the new owners insisted that they were part of the sale.

While this Poulson light fixture is not inexpensive, it is absolutely worth it. Everyone who walks into my living room comments on how beautiful it is. The pendant light 'makes' the room now. It's wonderful.

Beautiful fixture

I bought 3 of these pendants for a long hallway in my home. They are beautiful and well made. We are pleased with this selection and the service from YLighting. The ship time was reasonable and the fixtures well-packaged.

Clean, crisp and complimentary.

Perfect for a smaller dining space with great light output. Does not over power the space and creates a nice design element.

I adore it!

This pendant is not only gorgeous, it provides a lovely light for working as well as ambient light for atmosphere. When dimmed, the pendants look like hovering, friendly space ships!

Lovely pendant for our new kitchen

We just love this light. It is simple, yet beautiful. It gives off a lovely light. It was not hard to install and came with a long cord that could be adjusted to any length. We have ours on a dimmer to adjust for different moods and times of day. I looked at hundreds of light fixtures before finding this one that suits our taste perfectly.

Simple, elegant, and illuminates our round dining table perfectly.

Love this light. Beautifully proportioned using quality materials. Its multi-layered reflective surfaces cast a wonderful pool of golden light on our round dining table while keeping the light bulb itself completely hidden. The light quality is excellent just using the incandescent bulb I've installed at the moment until the 100 watt LED bulb I ordered arrives. Carefully packed by manufacturer, who takes well-deserved pride in their product. My husband agreed that it really "completes the room." Even better than we'd hoped.
