Design by Arne Jacobsen, 1960.
By Louis Poulsen.

Designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, Denmark, this modern classic features an asymmetrical shape and tiltable head. The base of the lamp has a hole, originally intended to accommodate an ashtray. Without the ashtray, however, the hole adds elegance and lightness to the design. AJ Table creates direct and angled illumination. The lighting characteristics make it suitable when placed in a situation where distinct and directed illumination is required. When the lamp is tilted downwards, the edge is horizontal. The inside of the shade is matte white enamel. The screening is effective so you cannot look up into the light source. Using a clear incandescent lamp the light is exploited the best way and the light rays delineated precisely.

Spun steel shade, steel stem and die-cast zinc base. 8 ft. power cord. On/off switch located in the base. Available in several color options.

Arne Jacobsen

Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) was trained as a bricklayer and graduated from The Technical Society's school in 1924 and Copenhagen Art Academy 1927. In 1928 he received the Academy's gold medal, but prior to this, when only 23, he was awarded a silver medal at the 1925 Paris World Exhibition — the first of numerous honours that became a natural accompaniment to his artistic activities, his untiring search and his brilliant conceptions, made manifest by many successes in competitions at home and abroad.

Louis Poulsen

Louis Poulsen's approach to architectural development began with its collaboration with famous and well respected lighting designers, like Poul Henningsen. Together they created a lighting and product philosophy encompassed by the words "function", "comfort" and "ambience". This philosophy continues to influence simple and functional product design, which focuses on well-being and the perception of artificial light, which leads to the creation of unique lighting environments. Louis Poulsen's approach to lighting lies in a very strict and uncompromising product philosophy grounded in simplicity. All elements must serve a light-related purpose. The result is a product line that displays simple and discreet designs ideally suited to all types of architecture across cultural styles.
