Poul Henningsen

Poul Henningsen was born in Copenhagen to the famous Danish actress Agnes Henningsen. He never graduated as an architect, but studied at The Technical School at Frederiksberg, Denmark from 1911-14, and then at Technical College in Copenhagen from 1914-17.

He started practicing traditional functionalistic architecture, but over the years his professional interests changed to focus mainly on lighting. He also expanded his field of occupation into areas of writing, becoming a journalist and an author. For a short period at the beginning of WWII, he was the head architect of the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. But like many other creative people, he was forced to flee Denmark during the German occupation but soon became a vital part of the Danish colony of artists living in Sweden.

His lifelong collaboration with Louis Poulsen Lighting began in 1925 and lasted until his death. To this day, Louis Poulsen Lighting still benefits from his genius. Poul Henningsen was also the first editor of the company magazine "NYT". The CEO of Louis Poulsen at the time, Sophus Kaastrup-Olsen, gave the magazine to PH as a gift because he had been terminated from the Danish newspaper he worked for (his opinions were too radical).

Poul Henningsen's pioneering work concerning the relations between light structures, shadows, glare, and color reproduction, compared to man's need for light remains the foundation of the lighting theories still practiced by Louis Poulsen Lighting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The gold standard of Dining Table Pendants I'm Danish. In Denmark, the majority of homes have this lamp over their dinner table. I was delighted to discover that I could buy it here. After you have had this lamp, you'll never like any other dinner table lamps. The small issues I had when installing it were: (1) It takes some effort to find the 200W incandescent light bulb that you need for this lamp (or a dimmable CFL or LED equivalent). (2) It took even more effort to find the tracklight power adapter I needed to hang it. It would be good if someone would offer a kit that included the track adapter and a cord already cut to the right length for hanging the lamp from an 8-foot apartment ceiling.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Joy to Behold A true work of art. I kept the light on continuously for the first few days after it was installed just to admire it. In addition to its beautiful design, it is also extremely well engineered and precision manufactured. Examples: the main body of the fixture is attached to the bulb holder with a bayonet mount - a simple twist removes it for easy cleaning and bulb replacement; the bulb holder incorporates a screw adjustment to lower or raise the bulb so that it provides optimal light distribution; all edges are beaded - no risk of cuts. Overall, very satisfied with this purchase.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Classic design We installed this fixture in our dining room a number of years ago. Fits our '50's ranch perfectly. We have it on a dimmer switch and it really does a great job of lighting our dining room whether on its maximum setting or dimmed as an accent light. It does have a very precarious method of attaching the shade to the main fixuture by hooking three flanges on the shade around discs on the upper part. They barely hang onto the discs. Our shade fell off completely and dented very easily. Be very careful when dusting. Too expensive to replace the shade so will just live with it. Not everyone notices the fact it is not perfectly round anymore but for the two architects in the house it's the first thing we notice when walking in the room. That connection detail is a disappointment in an otherwise beautiful design.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Fixture is a True Classic Well what can I say. I knew I would not be disappointed with this purchase and I was not. The PH5 is truely a classic and looks great above my dining room table and would look great anywhere I would decide to hang it. The only thing negative I can say is that the company that ships the fixture (not YLighting) shipped it to the wrong address. How disappointed I was when I found this out. After calling my sales representative and informing her of this issue another one was shipped out immediately. The fixture arrives very well packed and it should since it is rather delicate since it is made of spun aluminum. Be careful not to dent it when installing it. You will not be disappointed with this fixture--go ahead buy one!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great modern fixture! I really love this light, we are using it as a dinning room table light and it is an art object in the space and a great conversation piece. Only comment is to take a look at other photos of the fixture as there is a blue accent on the inside face of the fins and a blue connector piece that connects the fins. These both look great but were a little bit of surprise from the y-lighting and mfr pictures

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not only a light, but a piece of art. The PH 5 has an elegant design which provides more than enough light while also serving as a piece of art. Installation was a breeze. The only reason I give this a 4 and not a 5 is due to how the bottom piece attaches to the top piece. Be very careful when installing. The bottom piece is held in place by sliding it under 3 round holders in the top piece. The bottom piece barely slides under these holders, and I almost dropped the bottom piece during installation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Piece of Art We spent a lot of time looking for an appropriate dining room light for our Saarinen Table. Several were tried, several were looked at This one exceeded our expectations The subtle blue and red shadings to interior components produces a beautiful light We have spotted the lamp fixture from the ceiling with Yellow spots to give the light a warm glow when not illuminated It really is a wonderful conversation piece and works well in our midcentury home

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Classic Mid-Century Modern Fixture This mid-50's designed Poulsen fixture is the perfect addition to the mid-century modern home I purchased this year. It's a simple, elegant pendant fixture, but the optics are absolutely amazing. It directs light down to the dining table as well as distributing diffused light in all directions - but no glare and no direct view of the lamp source. It's amazing that lighting manufacturers can't design fixtures this well today!

What type of bulb is now used in this pendant since incandescent are no longer available

Asked by: mfbc
Hi there! Incandescent are still available and can be found at your local hardware or specialty lighting store. They can also be found online through retailers such as bulbs.com, bulbman.com, and 1000bulbs.com. This is listed as using a 200W 120V E26(medium base) A23 incandescent. You can always select a lower wattage if you prefer as well as any 200W or lower Incandescent equivalent, halogen, Compact Fluorescent, or replaceable LED. Should you require some additional clarification beyond this and would like to speak to a Product Specialist directly, feel free to give us a call anytime at 866.842.6209 and we can assist you. I see that the lamp type is incandescent. Would other types work too? Incandescent bulbs are not easy to find around!

Asked by: Frederic
Hi Frederic, and thanks for your question. The PH 5 Pendant Light can accommodate bulbs with an E26 (medium base). This is the most common base size for bulbs. You can use any bulb (LED, Halogen, etc) that matches this base size, as long as you don't exceed the recommended maximum wattage of 200W. Please let us know if you have any further questions or need assistance with your product choices. Brian - YLiving Customer Support 866-842-6209

what is the color combo shown? I don't see that as a choice?

Asked by: antelope
Hello Antelope, thanks for the question. The first photo shown of the PH 5 Pendant light is the dark grey/turquoise model (although in the photo you cannot see the turquoise). The following photo detail in the examples shows the detail of the color choice which can only be seen from underneath the fixture. Please let us know if you have any further questions or need assistance with your product choices. Brian - YLighting Customer Support 866-842-6209

is this item in stock and ready to ship?

Asked by: Lilly
Hello there. We do not ship from our warehouse directly, rather most fixtures come from the warehouse of the respective manufacturer. While these units do tend to be in stock, the best thing to do to ensure stock would be to call in at the time of order. That way our sales staff can call the manufacturer directly and get a live ETA so that you can plan your project accordingly. Many thanks for reaching out! YLighting Customer Service

Is the painted finish shiny or matt?

Asked by: stokes
Thanks for your interest in this design. The paint is mostly matte, and though it still reflects light off of the the surface nicely, it will not have the same mirror-like reflection as a shiny laminate/gloss finish would. Please let us know if we can offer any additional clarification beyond this - we are happy to help! Parin YLighting Customer Service
