Design by Poul Henningsen, 1958. PH 5 provides glare-free illumination and is well-suited to hang low above a table. The design of the visible reflectors ensures that light is directed both vertically and horizontally. Light is diffused through a sand-blasted glass shield located in the lower shade. The inside cone is painted red, and together with the small blue reflector creates a warmer tone of light. White wet painted suspension with painted white on the underside. Twist-lock design for fast, tool-less relamping. Spun aluminum white wet painted cone with red painted on the underside. Internal shade with matte white finish on the top side and dark blue finish on the underside. Purple rolled aluminum supporting struts. White ceiling canopy which mounts to 4" octagonal junction box. 12 foot long 3-conductor, 18 AWG white PVC covered power cord. He never graduated as an architect, but studied at The Technical School at Frederiksberg, Denmark from 1911-14, and then at Technical College in Copenhagen from 1914-17. He started practicing traditional functionalistic architecture, but over the years his professional interests changed to focus mainly on lighting. He also expanded his field of occupation into areas of writing, becoming a journalist and an author. For a short period at the beginning of WWII, he was the head architect of the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. But like many other creative people, he was forced to flee Denmark during the German occupation but soon became a vital part of the Danish colony of artists living in Sweden. His lifelong collaboration with Louis Poulsen Lighting began in 1925 and lasted until his death. To this day, Louis Poulsen Lighting still benefits from his genius. Poul Henningsen was also the first editor of the company magazine "NYT". The CEO of Louis Poulsen at the time, Sophus Kaastrup-Olsen, gave the magazine to PH as a gift because he had been terminated from the Danish newspaper he worked for (his opinions were too radical). Poul Henningsen's pioneering work concerning the relations between light structures, shadows, glare, and color reproduction—compared to man's need for light remains the foundation of the lighting theories still practiced by Louis Poulsen Lighting. Louis PoulsenCreating ideal functional, comfortable and ambience-generating lighting for people has been Louis Poulsen Lighting's mission from its incorporation. Louis Poulsen Lighting's overall ambition is to create harmonious and people-friendly lighting. Customer ReviewsGreat modern fixture! I really love this light, we are using it as a dinning room table light and it is an art object in the space and a great conversation piece. Only comment is to take a look at other photos of the fixture as there is a blue accent on the inside face of the fins and a blue connector piece that connects the fins. These both look great but were a little bit of surprise from the y-lighting and mfr pictures By: Jason C., Architect (Boston, MA) A perfect choice for my dining room. This lamp met all the specifications given. It is a very unique design, providing an ideal lighting for a dining table without lightening up the entire room. Simple lines but sophisticated. Installation was straight forward and I had it up hanging in no time. Just wish the bulb had been more common. By: Jutta H., Homeowner (Wauwatosa, WI, USA) Classic design We installed this fixture in our dining room a number of years ago. Fits our '50's ranch perfectly. We have it on a dimmer switch and it really does a great job of lighting our dining room whether on its maximum setting or dimmed as an accent light. It does have a very precarious method of attaching the shade to the main fixuture by hooking three flanges on the shade around discs on the upper part. They barely hang onto the discs. Our shade fell off completely and dented very easily. Be very careful when dusting. Too expensive to replace the shade so will just live with it. Not everyone notices the fact it is not perfectly round anymore but for the two architects in the house it's the first thing we notice when walking in the room. That connection detail is a disappointment in an otherwise beautiful design. By: Dual, Architect (Pittsburgh) Pretty lamp. Okay lighting. Like the style. Overall lighting is okay - a little dim for my taste. Odd style light bulb - A23. Hard to find. Recommend dropping down to a lower height for adequate lighting. Shade installation is delicate - need to pay attention and be careful. By: B, Homeowner (San Carlos) A beautiful light We love this light. It's perfect for our dining table. By: Jun Z., Homeowner (Westfield, NJ, USA) Timeless classic This light looks fantastic over our kitchen table. By: Antonio, Homeowner (Cleveland, OH) Classic Mid-Century Modern Fixture This mid-50's designed Poulsen fixture is the perfect addition to the mid-century modern home I purchased this year. It's a simple, elegant pendant fixture, but the optics are absolutely amazing. It directs light down to the dining table as well as distributing diffused light in all directions - but no glare and no direct view of the lamp source. It's amazing that lighting manufacturers can't design fixtures this well today! By: Tim M., Architect (Ohio) Not only a light, but a piece of art. The PH 5 has an elegant design which provides more than enough light while also serving as a piece of art. Installation was a breeze. The only reason I give this a 4 and not a 5 is due to how the bottom piece attaches to the top piece. Be very careful when installing. The bottom piece is held in place by sliding it under 3 round holders in the top piece. The bottom piece barely slides under these holders, and I almost dropped the bottom piece during installation. By: Wayne, Homeowner (Charlottesville, VA) The gold standard of Dining Table Pendants I'm Danish. In Denmark, the majority of homes have this lamp over their dinner table. I was delighted to discover that I could buy it here. After you have had this lamp, you'll never like any other dinner table lamps. The small issues I had when installing it were: (1) It takes some effort to find the 200W incandescent light bulb that you need for this lamp (or a dimmable CFL or LED equivalent). (2) It took even more effort to find the tracklight power adapter I needed to hang it. It would be good if someone would offer a kit that included the track adapter and a cord already cut to the right length for hanging the lamp from an 8-foot apartment ceiling. By: Lars P., Homeowner (Santa Barbara, CA) I love this light. It is beautifully designed and the light that emanates is soft and non-glaring. Can't say enough good things about it. By: Catherine S., Homeowner (New York, N.Y.) it is simple and stunning easy to install. hangs perfectly. beautiful design By: Constance C., Homeowner (blue bell pa usa) A "knock out" classic design!!! This is the fourth purchase of the Poulsen PH5 for us...only because each time we sold homes the new owners insisted that the PH5 above our dining room table is part of the sale. We also have the PH4/3 over our kitchen table. By: Milos, Homeowner (Beaufort, NC) fantastic I love the PH5 as the pendant over my kitchen table. It is very stylish and an absolutely beautiful addition to our kitchen area. By: Momotaro, Homeowner (las vegas) This Fixture is a True Classic Well what can I say. I knew I would not be disappointed with this purchase and I was not. The PH5 is truely a classic and looks great above my dining room table and would look great anywhere I would decide to hang it. The only thing negative I can say is that the company that ships the fixture (not YLighting) shipped it to the wrong address. How disappointed I was when I found this out. After calling my sales representative and informing her of this issue another one was shipped out immediately. The fixture arrives very well packed and it should since it is rather delicate since it is made of spun aluminum. Be careful not to dent it when installing it. You will not be disappointed with this fixture--go ahead buy one!!! By: int designer, Designer (Washington DC) Beautiful and timeless We've had this lamp for nearly twenty years, and it still looks great. Great light distribution, great shape. It really makes the room. I will say that it's also great for CFLs -- kind of a tight space, but after you find one that fits, it hides the corkscrew shape perfectly. I do agree with the other comment that it dents easily. Ours does have a ding, but it hasn't detracted significantly. By: Sean, Homeowner (Minneapolis, MN) Beautiful Piece of Art We spent a lot of time looking for an appropriate dining room light for our Saarinen Table. Several were tried, several were looked at This one exceeded our expectations The subtle blue and red shadings to interior components produces a beautiful light We have spotted the lamp fixture from the ceiling with Yellow spots to give the light a warm glow when not illuminated It really is a wonderful conversation piece and works well in our midcentury home By: Scott P., Homeowner (Bend, OR) Customer QuestionsQ: Does this lamp come fully assembled? A: The main part of the shade is assembled, it just needs to be attached to the socket assembly. Q: I saw what I believe to be this lamp in Denmark. The store owner told me part of what makes the light so soft is that it has a red + blue light inside that gives off subtle hues. Is this true of this lamp? Or is it a different one? A: The inside cones of the PH5 are painted red and blue. The below description came from Louis Poulsen's website: The PH 5 consists of three reflecting shades, a cone and two smaller colored shades (red and blue) designed to improve the light source’s color rendering properties. Red and blue was a natural choice because these two colors belong to the spectrum of which the human eye is least sensitive, and at the same time they weaken the yellow/green spectrum where the eye is most sensitive.
