Poul Henningsen

Poul Henningsen was born in Copenhagen to the famous Danish actress Agnes Henningsen. He never graduated as an architect, but studied at The Technical School at Frederiksberg, Denmark from 1911-14, and then at Technical College in Copenhagen from 1914-17.

He started practicing traditional functionalistic architecture, but over the years his professional interests changed to focus mainly on lighting. He also expanded his field of occupation into areas of writing, becoming a journalist and an author. For a short period at the beginning of WWII, he was the head architect of the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. But like many other creative people, he was forced to flee Denmark during the German occupation but soon became a vital part of the Danish colony of artists living in Sweden.

His lifelong collaboration with Louis Poulsen Lighting began in 1925 and lasted until his death. To this day, Louis Poulsen Lighting still benefits from his genius. Poul Henningsen was also the first editor of the company magazine "NYT". The CEO of Louis Poulsen at the time, Sophus Kaastrup-Olsen, gave the magazine to PH as a gift because he had been terminated from the Danish newspaper he worked for (his opinions were too radical).

Poul Henningsen's pioneering work concerning the relations between light structures, shadows, glare, and color reproduction¬ócompared to man's need for light remains the foundation of the lighting theories still practiced by Louis Poulsen Lighting.

Louis Poulsen's approach to architectural development began with its collaboration with famous and well respected lighting designers, like Poul Henningsen. Together they created a lighting and product philosophy encompassed by the words "function", "comfort" and "ambience". This philosophy continues to influence simple and functional product design, which focuses on well-being and the perception of artificial light, which leads to the creation of unique lighting environments. Louis Poulsen's approach to lighting lies in a very strict and uncompromising product philosophy grounded in simplicity. All elements must serve a light-related purpose. The result is a product line that displays simple and discreet designs ideally suited to all types of architecture across cultural styles.

Great lamp - super fast delivery

We are a big fan of Poul Henningsen and the anniversary edition in a multitude of colors is great. Ylighting impressed with very fast service and excellent overall price, which was far better than, say, other online furniture retailers.

Well Worth the Wait!

I have been saving up to buy "Anything PH" for a very long time -- you see, I am from the 50's! When I learned about the PH 50 and that it came in Wasabi Green, I knew the time had come for me place the order. And when the order came, the huge box sat in the trunk of my car until I could arrange for an electrician. And when the electrician finally got around to me a couple of weeks later, he announced that the bulb required by the PH 50 was a 200 watt A23 type and that he did not have any bulbs like that on his truck but that perhaps one of the big home improvement centers might carry such a thing. But they did not. And neither did any of the little local hardware stores. So I went online and ordered a single bulb from and it finally came yesterday! Imagine my excitement as I inserted the bulb into the socket and then attached the shade into the socket section! Finally, after probably 60 long years, my wish was about to come true! Standing in the darkened dining area, I closed my eyes and flicked the switch, turning the dimmer down as low as it would go. Then I opened my eyes for the Big Reveal. It is not possible to describe the cozy effect that the PH 50 had had on the cherry dining table that I'd set with white placemats and my antique Limoges dinnerware -- with its tiny purple flowers with wasabi green leaves! Wonderful young things always go so well with Grannies!

Fast, efficient service. Excellent product.

Our Louis Poulsen 50th anniversary pendant is just what we wanted. Thank you for the efficient, professional service, and for packing the light using sustainable materials. We plan to purchase more lights from you for our "new" 1900 home in NH that will undergo renovation next spring.

Great light!

We purchased this light in 2008 and loved it. We sold our home last year and bought a new one this year. We missed our dining room light so much that we purchased another one. This time in chili red. The light looks fantastic in our new home and only uses a 100 watt bulb on a dimmer!

Beautiful unique light that enhances my kitchen.

I just completed a full kitchen remodel with my lighting one of the last things I did. I spent more time searching for the right lights than pretty much anything else. Y-lighting has a great selection and it was a tough choice. My partner and I made a decision on a light to hang over our granite kitchen table and then we saw the Poulsen. Had to have it, my partner let me make most of the decisions for the remodel until we got to the lighting and then she went crazy over the light fixtures. Love the way it looks, the warm feel it adds and the way it works in with the colors I already had. If I ever move I'm taking it with me.

Great looking pendant

I have the black version, and it really sets off the Eames dining set in my mid-century home. Looks like it was made for the place! The quality of light is perfect for dining -- it's directed down where you want it but is softer and more intimate than you get with a normal downward-facing fixture. We couldn't be happier.
