Design by Alberto Meda and Paolo Rizzatto, 1985.

The Berenice table lamp is the inimitable founding product in a new type range of reasonably small sprung-jointed lamps. The fluid articulation of its movements and its perfect stability make Berenice a light that can be moved around without occupying precious space and with minimum effort.

Berenice operates with a transformer that allows low voltage power to reach the bulb through its rods without electric wiring, allowing the fixture to remain slim and elegant. By simply touching the head ring, which is well insulated and independent from the bulb housing, the light can be moved in any direction.

Metal parts in diecast aluminum, reinforced nylon frictional joints, rynite head. Parabolic reflector in pressed glass or metal.

    beautiful but poor quality

I usually do not write reviews but feel that this one is needed. I have owned this lamp for about six or seven years now. I did not have any problems assembling the light like others have stated. I have not burned myself like others have mentioned and I did not install the small adjustment spike that rests directly below the hot bulb. The frame around the glass dome is plastic and does not get hot but I am certain that ugly metal spike would cause a blister.

The light worked flawlessly for about four years. The light output began to fade in and out and flicker. Eventually it stopped working completely. Since I have electrical experience, I disassembled the light to find a broken solder joint in the base. So I fixed it. It worked for about another year or two before it began to fade and flicker again. Now it will only stay on for a few seconds at a time. To get it to come on I have to push and pull in order to rotate all the joints (base, middle, and top) almost like I have to clean the corrosion off of the connections the way you would a car battery. It is too much work to get this lamp to stay on. I have disassembled the light a second time to check all the connections and everything appears to be ok. I have not tried to contact customer support about this problem simply because I tried to order the desk clamp

(not available in the US) shortly after I purchased the lamp.

So here I am in the market for a new desk lamp. I love the slenderness of this lamp but there are too many opportunities for failure when there are so many connection points. Buy this lamp only if you intend on looking at it and not actually expecting to use it.

it's gone and i'm happy about it

i burned my fingers so many times that i got really tired of this lamp. besides i got minor electric shocks whenever i would happen to touch the 'arm'. would not recommend this lamp, there's plenty of other great designs out there. i got rid of the lamp and am very happy about that.

    Good aesthetics, Horrible functionality.

The photo of the product is great. The lamp looks sleek, has a glass dome, and nice light output.

But, the functionality and usability is horrible. The customer has to assemble the product and that is hard. To assemble the cover, the user has to deform a plastic ring and snap everything into place. The instructions are telling because there are several warnings about being careful to avoid breaking the parts... crappy design.

This plastic ring looks cheap. There are plastic tabs hanging down where the mold wasn't tight. I'll need to go buy some sand paper and remove the burs.

Finally, the switch is right by the hot light bulb, instead of down by the base (like most desk lamps). So, you have to watch out to make sure you don't burn your hand when trying to turn off the light.

If I had not already thrown away the packaging, I would return the light. Oh well.

good product, slow shipping from manufact

this is a good product that took a very long time to get here from italy. ylighting service was very good, but the ship time was out of their hands. the product appears to be high quality and is very well designed. it is an icon, after all. some of the plastic parts seem less rigid than other brands or models, however, this does not appear to impact performance or construction integrity.

    Remodel Housings

In contrast to new construction housings, remodeling housings are appropriate when you have limited or no access to the space above a new fixture, such as in an apartment or a home without crawl spaces or attics above.

    New Construction Housings

In contrast to remodeling housings, new construction housings are bulkier and need to be installed between joist beams or onto hangar bars and thus you need full access to the space above the fixture. This style is best used if you are building in a new space, gutting a room, or have an attic above or pop out ceiling, etc.

    Non-IC Rated

Non-IC stands for: non insulation contact. Thus, non-IC-rated housings must be kept at least 3 inches away from any insulation.

    IC Rated

IC stands for: insulation contact. Thus, IC-rated housings can come in direct contact with thermal insulation.

    MR16 Halogen Bulb

MR 16 is a standard format for halogen multifaceted reflector light bulbs. MR16 lamps are regularly used in place of standard incandescent light bulbs as they harness and shoot light, resulting in less light loss than a traditional bulb. These are best used when you want focused light such as in a pendant over a countertop or an accent light on a painting.

    Wet Location

If the lighting system is exposed to direct impact by water from splashing or dripping, which will make the fixture wet, then the location is a wet location. Your most common wet locations are uncovered outdoor areas.
