Design by Ross Lovegrove, 1998.
The little light accompanies your footsteps in the dark. SolarBud needs no electric wiring because it is powered by a battery recharged by sunlight. With exactly the right brightness, it picks out paths, tracks, swimming pool edges, doorways etc, that would otherwise be hard to recognize in the dark.
The solar energy, collected by a polycrystalline silicon photovoltaic cell, powers two rechargeable nickel cadmium batteries. After sunset, they can yield the energy accumulated from the sun to spontaneously turn on the high efficiency leds. The duration of the light when fully charged is between 13 and 15 hours. The sun exposure time necessary to reload the energy expended after 13 hours of lighting is about 5 hours.

Good product at unreasonable price
The Solarbud is one of the few, if any outdoor solar lights that has a somewhat attractive appearance. This, however, comes at a steep price. Given the dropping prices of the underlying technology of solar lighting, this seems a bit unreasonable. One would also wish for a slightly more sophisticated idea securing the Solarbud to the ground (to prevent theft in public areas) than a mere 1/4 inch hole in the stem.

Excellent light for our modern rural setting.
These good looking Solar Buds give us just enough light to guide you in the dark and look great during the day in our modern landscape. We required a subtle path light since we are in a rural setting where a little light goes a long way. The Solar Buds charged up fully in two days of sunlight and are still working after days of cloudy weather. We look forward to moving them around for special outdoor parties in the summer. Yes, they are expensive (thus 4 stars not 5) but good design is important to us.
