Design by Cecilie Manz, 2005. Creating a simple, soft design for small and large pendants was the main idea behind the Caravaggio series. The curves passed through a number of shapes during the design process, but the final version captures a feminine form. The shade is made of drawn aluminum and coated with smooth, high-gloss paint. The suspension technology is masculine in construction, creating the right counterbalance to the shade's feminine lines. The suspension assembly consists of curved steel rods and two pieces of turned brass with a matte chrome plating. The depth of the shade prevents glare, no matter how high the pendant is hung. Caravaggio also features an opening at the top, which casts light upwards and illuminates both the suspension and cord. Black high-gloss finish comes with a red cord; white high-gloss finish comes with a dark grey cord. Dimensions: 15.75"D X 20"H; supplied with 118" of field-cuttable cord. As the child of parents occupied with art and design, designing always formed a natural part of her life. She chose design as her living when she began studying at the Danish School of Design in 1992. She furthered her great interest for function and conceptualization as an exchange student to Helsinki where she attended the Finnish University of Art and Design. In 1998, a year after she graduated from the Danish School of Design she started her own studio, Manz Lab. In addition to her work with industrial products, her experimental prototypes and more sculptural one-offs make up an important part of her work and approach. Our kitchen, dining room and living room are all one large room. The Caravaggio pendants are more than sophisticated enough to share the space with a dining and living room. The quality of the fixture is excellent and the service from YLighting was hassle free. We ordered the white and the plate that attaches to the ceiling was a dark cream. We want our walls white, and I didn't think that a pure white light should come with a cream plate. As for the chipping paint...I went to the local Design Within Reach and saw that their Caravaggio also had the paint chipping away around the holes. Their floor model was black and I believe that it had a black ceiling plate with the red cord. The chipping paint didn't just seem to be ours. DWR's had it too. We sent it back as defective. Y-Lighting was good about getting our shipping covered because it was defective. When the manufacturer gets it back, we'll hopefully get our money back soon after.
