Philippe Starck

Born in Paris in 1949, Philippe Starck is one of the most original designers and architects of the last three decades. Having designed furniture, hotels, mega-yachts, lighting and many others throughout his career, Starck has become a fixture in modern design. Not only does Starck create beautifully unconventional designs, he creates a finished product whose main purpose is to function well before anything else.

Philippe Starck has obtained many important acknowledgements, including the Grand Prix National de la Création industrielle and the Honor Award of the American Institute of Architects. In Starck's own words, "subversive, ethical, ecological, political, humorous... this is how I see my duty as a designer."

FLOS Lighting

FLOS was founded in 1962. The very same year they began producing a number of lamps that were to become classics in Italian industrial design. These first lamps were Arco, Relemme, Toio and Taccia all designed by Achille and Piergiacomo Castiglioni. As a tangible proof of their timeless design and technical excellence, these lamps continue to be produced today.

It all started with cocoon . . .In 1959 Arturo Eisenkeil from Merano, an importer of cocoon — a spray-on plastic coating produced in the United States — was tracking down possible applications for this new material. He joined forces with Dino Gavina and Cesare Cassina and set up a company to produce lighting fixtures. This marked the beginning of the long-standing association in the area of design with the Castiglioni brothers and Tobia Scarpa. The first cocoon lamps ever created were the offspring of this collaboration: Viscontea, Taraxacum and Gatto by the Castiglioni brothers and Fantasma by Scarpa. FLOS moved from Merano to the province of Brescia in 1964: At first to Nave and then to the current premises in Bovezzo. Sergio Gandini became chairman of the company in 1965. In 1974, the company became the owner of Arteluce one of the key Italian companies in the industrial design sector. Gino Sarfatti, an industrialist and designer, is the founder of Arteluce. Several models designed by Sarfatti himself have been incorporated into the product range.

From the very outset, FLOS has been characterized by its high-quality approach to lamp design and production. Many of the numerous lamps designed for the company, first by Achille and Piergiacomo, are undoubtedly some of the best-known and most successful products of industrial design. They have won awards and historical critical accolades, and are included in all the most important collections and design museums around the world.

FLOS' production will continue to be imbued with various design trends that embody their attention to leading-edge research combined with highly-efficient production, sales and communications. In 2002, the company celebrated forty years production of designer lamps.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from After trawling through seemingly thousands of lamps on website we finally found one we both loved. The picture was true to how the table lamp looks in real life. We were happy with the finish and quality although we had not realised the lamp is acrylic not glass however you can't tell that by looking at it, it's only when you tap it or pick it up you realise. Is a beautiful lamp , very sleek and stylish. The dimmer switch is great; the different levels of light change the look of the lamp: on a dimmer setting the lamp takes on an bronze glow making the lamp suitable for transitional decor, on the brightest position the light is very white, silver and modern.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great table lamp! This is a very nice little lamp that is as good as it looks in the photos. I especially like the bright halogen light. Many lamps with regular incandescent bulbs don't put out enough llight but this one uses a strong halogen bulb. It's smaller than you might think in the photos so make sure to see the measurements. But you couldn't ask for a cleaner looking, bright light that looks great in all sorts of furnishings, for a fair price. The only quibble is that the on/off switch is positioned a little too far down on the cord so I have to use a twist/tie to bunch up some cord (I like the switch to lie on the nighstand so I can easily find it). I don't know why their designers don't think of that but it's a small quibble overall.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Classic Starck, perfect complement to other transparent polycarbonate furniture! Miss K is beautiful. It is not a cheap product to purchase (esp. considering that, simply put, Miss K is a plastic table lamp; but its solid construction, build quality, and attention to detail help justify its heftier price tag. It is a little bit of a splurge but I would happily purchase this item again. My only point of contention is that the ylighting bulb that shipped with the lamp didn't work, but a local trip to the hardware store fixed that. Like a nice pair of shoes, the lamp also comes with a Flos dust bag which I have yet to find a use for...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pretty but with drawbacks on the amount of light given off... The Miss K by Philippe Starck for FLOS is a beautiful lamp; however, even with 100 w light it doesn't give off enough light to read on a table next to the bed. I have two (one on each side of the bed) and they are great night lights and pretty to look at...but maybe not so practical. Also, I love the dimmer switch but wish the light on the switch would stay on when the light is off not on; that way I could find it in the dark!!! As mentioned, great to look at but drawbacks in the amount of light given off.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Lamp, but replacement parts hard to find I bought this lamp ~ 3 years ago and have very much enjoyed it. I love the look and the dimmer feature. Unfortunately, a fuse in the lamp blew a few months ago, and my husband has been leading a fruitless search for a replacement (replacement bulbs were challenging to find, but the fuse has proven impossible to date). He has tried four hardware stores and has messages in with ylighting. Other than this issue, I would highly recommend the Miss K. It is too expensive, however, to last only 2 - 3 years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best lamp ever! I saw this lamp in use at a friend's office, and was really impressed by its appearance, and especially by the bright but indirect light it produced. It looked so good that I decided to order one for my husband's bedside. It was a gift for him -- and he was thrilled. Not only does this little lamp look elegant, but it really is effective for reading. It's a terrific addition to our bedroom. In fact, I'm thinking of getting another one for my side of the bed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very beautiful lighting! This lamp arrived in a well packaged boxed, it included the light and it was easy to install. The only thing I notice is that since the material is plastic and the silver effect is due to an inner coat of silver sometimes you can see some spots where the paint chipped. Its not that noticeable so I am not sending it back. Other than that me and my husband loved them. We got 2 for each side of our bed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Miss K is unique and classy. The appearance in person is very much like what is shown in the images. Dimensions are provided so I knew it would be on the small side. However, I was hoping that it would serve as a bedside reading light and it really doesn't provide enough light to read by. It throws off a tremendous amount of light but most of it shines upwards. It's a good looking and functional piece, just not ideal to read by.
