Modern Fan Company

Modern Fan represents a new age in ceiling fans - the marrying of efficient function with contemporary design. Designed by Ron Rezek, the Modern Fan Company's models celebrate the modern idiom through mechanical simplification, geometric forms and contemporary finishes.

Ron Rezek

Ron Rezek designed the world's first contemporary-styled ceiling fan, the Stratos, in 1986. But his list of accomplishments in the design world is long and varied, from lifeguard equipment to contemporary lighting. In 1997, Ron started The Modern Fan Co. in Ashland, Oregon, which produces and sells only contemporary ceiling fans.

His ceiling fans have been widely used in hotels, restaurants, retail and institutional applications, and all types of residential projects.

Ron Rezek's Philosophy:
"I don't think contemporary means a stark white room. I think it means a tasteful alignment of important elements. There are some designers who copy the Modernists who have come before. But I think 'contemporary' is the pursuit of the new." "People assume that all contemporary fixtures are more functional than traditional ones. That is because contemporary fixtures are easier to clean and they seem to be more utilitarian based on their appearance. And because of their simplicity and lack of ornamentation, they also have an alliance with the industrial look. But all of this doesn't necessarily translate into function. The Modern Fan Co.'s fans are designed to be functional and energy efficient. This is part of being contemporary and pushing the edge. Energy efficiency is the wave of the future."

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Altus fan from The Modern Fan Company is a great product. I just finished the installation of two Altus fans for a high cieling living room. Because the wiring was not in place, we ordered the fans with hand held remote controls instead of hard wired wall switches. I was impressed with the overall finish and quality of the product. The housings and blade holders are heavy well finished die castings and the entire unit is heavier than I expected. The box arrived with all necessary parts neatly packaged and ready. I would have given the fan a 5 rating, but for a mild disappointment with the speed control. The remote allows 3 speeds. The fan is dead quiet and perfectly balanced at all speeds. The Low setting is very slow and gentle. The next speed, Medium is adequate for bringing hot air down from the high ceiling. However, when you switch to high, it is a big jump in speed and air movement. The fan would be a little better with a four speed remote allowing a "3rd gear" between medium and high. For most settings using remote controls this will probably not be an issue. All things considered, it's a great product and I would strongly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I just love my Altus ceiling fan which is sophisticated, yet understated in appearance and performs efficiently and quietly---should have purchased months ago! My handyman who also does electrical installed my fan quickly and without confronting any issues. Since I had no electrical already installed in the ceiling location, he had to run wires from my tiny, hard to access attic. He did all that with the fan operating by remote solely within one and one-half hours. Now I have instant gratifying air movement for those warm, muggy days that we have been experiencing in La Jolla. The air movement is fantastic and the fan's styling complements my decor in my contemporary remodeled bungalow. I highly recommend this fan and appreciated the professional, courteous consulting of YLighting sales persons. Thank you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great! The Altus ceiling fan is one of the Modern Fan Company's models. It is light, slender, whisper quiet and highly effective with minimal vibration. It was well packed with complete instructions, and the remote even comes with a battery. I chose ground shipping. This is a little slow from west coast to east coast, but the rate was pretty good. The fan is pretty easy to install, but there is a specific sequence that you have to follow. You will need a phillips screwdriver and a wire cutter/stripper, presuming that the circuit and fan box are already present. I liked it well enough that I ordered another one for another room.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great fan, easy install. Excellent fan, clear install instructions, and well packed. Having installed several brands of fan in past years, Modern Fan Co takes the cake for clear easy to follow instructions. The design makes hanging and making electrical connections a breeze. I ordered the atlus with cfl light and found it to be a nice warm and bright light which fills the bedroom it's installed in. I plan on ordering more atlas fans at some point for my living room. Also, for what it's worth, the Altus looks far far better in person versus online pictures (I had been leaning towards the ball but I'm glad I followed my instincts with the Altus).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful design We love the design of this fan, clean classic lines that don't overwhelm the room. Our electrician thought it was well built and easy to install. The maple blades are not quite as light-colored as I'd hoped, but they seem solid. We haven't yet gotten the balancing right, so it wobbles a lot on high speed, and doesn't push a huge amount of air on lower speeds. The single light is pleasant, though definitely supplementary rather than primary lighting for a room.I'd love to see the manufacturer offer a light kit that can put out more light and a pull chain control option. That, plus making sure we can get the fan balanced, would have us buying several more.

Are the blades individually removable?  I am looking to install this fan on our front porch, and it must go between the cathedral/vaulted ceiling and the joists.  But this would work only if the blades can be removed, and then reattached above the joists.

Asked by: Monty S
Hi there! The fan comes with the blades separate from the fan motor, so they should not create any conflict with your beams when installing this fan. Please let us know if we can offer any additional clarification beyond this - we are happy to help! Stephanie, YLighting Customer Service

Can you use a ceiling fan dimmer (e.g., Lutron makes a three speed one) with this product.  I prefer a wall-mounted dimmer to a remote.

Asked by: SavFan
Good question! This acutally has multi-speed wall or remote control options. It is part of step 5 when placing your order for these fans. For the wall control, you want to select 001 for just the fan and 004 if you chose the fan with one of the light kit options. Should you need assistance or further clarification, feel free to give us a call anytime at 866.842.6209 to speak to a Product Specialist directly, and we are more than happy to go over some options with you! Handheld remote; ok, simple enough, it turns the fan on and off, maybe selects speed. Does it? 3 speed? Is the fan reversible? But what is the 2-wire with remote? I have two wires in my ceiling, not switched.

Asked by: TomD
Hi there Tom D! The Altus Ceiling Fan is manually reversible by way of a switch on the fan motor. It allows you to change the directions of the fan for the fall and winter to help circulate the warm air that tends to get trapped near the ceiling and improve winter energy efficiency! This does have compatible remote options that adjust the multiple speeds as well as if you have a light kit, but the remote will not reverse the fan direction. The two wire option is when you are using a fan and light in conjunction or 2 fans without light kits in conjunction with each other. Feel free to give us a call anytime at 866.842.6209 should you require some additional clarification beyond this and would like to speak to a Product Specialists directly – they are happy to shed light on the subject! What does it take to reverse the direction of the blades for summer to winter change?  We have 23' foot height in our loft and do not want to have to climb up there twice a year!  Thanks.

Asked by: Savta
Hi there! This fan has a switch on the fan body that is used to reverse the direction for the seasons. Modern Fan Company does offer longer down rods to make it more accessible for your space or should you prefer on that is fully controlled by remote, they make the DC Slim Ceiling Fan (http://www.ylighting.com/modern-fan-dc-slim-ceiling-fan.html).To discuss this fixture in greater depth, or to follow up with anything else, feel free to give us a call anytime at 866.842.6209 and we are more than happy to go over some options with you. does this come with a pole that is much shorter so the fan can be closer to the ceiling

Asked by: Magnolia
Hi there. Yes this fan Includes 5" and 17" down rods for 12" or 24" overall heights, respectively. This allows you to swap out the down rods and adjust the fan height to meet a number of project constraints and environments. Can this fan be used outside ?

Asked by: stace
Hi there, and thanks for your interest in this design. This fan is not rated for outdoor applications because the unit is not watertight, meaning exposure to wind and rain would ruin the electrical components. It is however rated for damp locations, so it can be installed in humid environments like bathrooms.
