The Aurora Hugger is designed for a room with a low ceiling and the need for a primary light source in the center of the space. At only thirteen inches in length and with a high-output indirect light source, the Aurora Hugger is a great solution for residential applications.
The light source is a 40 watt T-5 circline fluorescent (included) which gives the equivalent of 180 watts of incandescent light while staying cool, saving energy and lasting forever (five years at six hours per day).
Note: Any control ordered with the Aurora will be supplied in a non-dimming version.
Ron Rezek designed the world's first contemporary-styled ceiling fan, the Stratos, in 1986. But his list of accomplishments in the design world is long and varied, from lifeguard equipment to contemporary lighting.
In 1997, Ron started The Modern Fan Co. in Ashland, Oregon, which produces and sells only contemporary ceiling fans.
His ceiling fans have been widely used in hotels, restaurants, retail and institutional applications, and all types of residential projects.
Ron Rezek's Philosophy:
"I don't think contemporary means a stark white room. I think it means a tasteful alignment of important elements. There are some designers who copy the Modernists who have come before. But I think 'contemporary' is the pursuit of the new."
"People assume that all contemporary fixtures are more functional than traditional ones. That is because contemporary fixtures are easier to clean and they seem to be more utilitarian based on their appearance. And because of their simplicity and lack of ornamentation, they also have an alliance with the industrial look. But all of this doesn't necessarily translate into function. The Modern Fan Co.'s fans are designed to be functional and energy efficient. This is part of being contemporary and pushing the edge. Energy efficiency is the wave of the future."
Designed by Ron Rezek, the Modern Fan Company's models celebrate the modern idiom through mechanical simplification, geometric forms and contemporary finishes. The unique ceiling fan styles of Modern Fan represent a new age in ceiling fans - the marrying of efficient function with contemporary design (you won't find any wicker or flowery fans here!).
Modern Fan Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How low can the fan go and still meet my local code?
All of the Modern Fan Company fans, when ordered at the default length, can be used on an eight foot ceiling and still meet local code, since code requires that the fan blades be at least seven feet off the floor. The code looks to the blade height and not the bottom of the fan body. However, for low ceiling installations, we recommend the Cirrus Hugger as it looks more proportional when installed. This is the most popular fan sold in New York City, for instance, due the high number of low-ceiling apartments there. For low ceilings, we recommend the Cirrus Hugger over the Cirrus Short as it is better balanced visually.
What size fan blades should I use?
You should always go with
the 52 blades unless the outer blades are going to be less than 24
from a wall. Typically, the only installations that have fans within 24
of a wall are either fans installed near soffits or fans installed in hallways.
Most of the fans look stubby when using the 42 blades, with
the exception of the Cirrus Short and the Cirrus Hugger
How far down should I drop the fan?
We recommend that you drop
the fan as far down as your aesthetics will allow in order to create the most
air circulation.
What kind of light should
I expect from the light kits? Will they light an entire room?
In general, the light produced
by the light kits will not be sufficient for an entire rooms illumination
with the exception of the Halo fan. The light kits that use MR16 bulbs will
not produce much task lighting at all and are more decorative in nature. The
light kits which use incandescent bulbs will illuminate the area directly below
and around the fan. The Halo has great lumen output and can easily light up
an entire room since this body is very large and the glass is a great light
diffuser. However, we do not recommend this fan in small rooms as the size of
the fan tends to be visually overpowering.
Can I use the fan outdoors?
All Modern Fan fans are UL approved
for damp locations. This means that you can use them outside. However, the fans
will deteriorate with exposure. Do not use the Halo outside as the glass will look
terrible in short order. Of course, this assumes that these outside installations
are under covered patios and are not fully exposed to the elements. When selecting
a finish, note that the brushed aluminum bodies hold up best when exposed to
the elements.
Can I use the fan on a
sloped ceiling?
We offer sloped ceiling
canopies for all of the fans. However, with respect to the Stratos, the sloped
ceiling installation is more difficult and should be performed by a licensed
electrician using the factory installed (at purchase) sloped ceiling adaptor.
Which lighting control
should I use?
While the choices in lighting
controls seem overwhelming, the decision shouldnt be:
MF001:
This is the basic three-speed control used to change speed on a fan without
a light. It mounts on a wall switch box and includes a Decora-style wall plate.
MF002: This is the
basic three-speed control (MF001) but with the ability to control a light (three
levels of light intensity). This control requires two circuits from the wall
box to the ceiling junction box (one circuit for the fan motor and one circuit
fot the fan light).
MF004 (MF011 for
Ball/Whirlybird): If you do not have two circuits leading to your fan installation,
then use this control. It uses the two wires that come from the junction box
to the wall box to control the fan motor and it uses a radio transmitter (similar
to a garage opener) to control the light on the fan.
MF009: This is the
same as the MF001 but is designed to control three-to-five fans simultaneously.
MF003 (MF010 for
Ball/Whirlybird): This is a handheld remote control unit that allows you to
control both the fan and the light. The remote control has a LCD screen which
shows the current setting. With the five buttons you can select one of the three
fans speeds, stop, or light intensity. A signal receiving unit is placed into
the fan canopy. A wall hanger is included with the remote.
Why is my fan sometimes
on when I come home?
If your fan is mysteriously
on when you come home from work, you are using one of the radio controllers.
There are dip switches up in the fan body that change the frequency that the
controller uses. Switch the frequency and your problem should go away.
Why does my fan wobble?
Fan wobble is an inherent
problem with fans due to minute variation in the fan blade weight distribution.
Modern Fan Company's fan blades are specified to be within one gram weight difference
to avoid wobble. However, some wobble tends to be inevitable due to variance
in installation location, airflow and other minutiae. Included in every fan
is a small tool to help balance the fan and thereby reduce wobble: Attach the
device to the end of each fan blade and turn the fan on. After trying this tool
on each blade, identify the blade which, when the tool is attached, produces
the least wobble. Then, move the tool from the outside of that blade towards
the center in half-inch increments until you find the sweet spot
(the location that produces the least wobble). In most cases, this will solve
your problem. Modern Fan Company does not consider wobble to be a defect, and
accordingly will not repair or replace installed fans due to wobble. YLighting
accepts returns on fans but only if the fan has not been installed. So if a
little wobble disturbs you, we discourage you from investing in a fan of any
kind.
Note: Note: Fluorescent ballast is not dimmable. This fan does not have a UL listing for damp locations, but is UL listed. Express shipping is available on this item. In most cases, orders received before 12:00 PM Pacific time will ship the same day.
A:Because there is a continuous light source (all the way around) the Aurora does not produce a true strobe effect. But some times the shadows behind objects in the room can appear to move a bit. The object is always lit but it is the shadow behind the object that can change angles.
Q:Can multiple fans be operated from one remote control?
A:For the Modern Fans- as long the fans are fan only and do not include light kits, multiple fans can be operated from one remote. Additional receivers will need to be ordered for each additional fan.
Customer Reviews4.5 out of 5
It met my expectations 100%
I was looking for a fan light for over my kitchen table. I wanted a fluorescent light for energy savings. Although there are hundreds of fan lights on the market by specifying the type of lighting that I wanted the selection availability became very small. This fan light struck me immediately as not being a run of the mill light. The design is unique and causes it to stand out but yet it is not ostentatious. It suited me to a T. Now that I have it installed and am using it, I am so very pleased with my selection. Do not bother to send any $25 gift certificate. I will probably never buy another light in my lifetime.

This is a wonderfully modern, functional and attractive neccessity.
The fixture is close enough to ceiling to e functional in a room with an 8' ceiling. The light is conveniently dimmable and the remote feature works extremely well for fan speed, dimming and on / off funtioning. It has a minimalist look AND is attracctive and funtional.
The Aurora hugger fan has a great contemporary look, soft reflective light and short enough in depth that a talk person can walk under.
I would recommend this fan / light comb to my clients.

Finally a nice fan and ligh but...
We were very happy to finally find a nice looking fan with a bright light that didn't hang too low. But we were very diappointed after installation to notice the effect the fan blades had on the light in the room. Because the light is above the blades, when the fan is on, it causes the light in the room to flicker. The blinking isn't terrible, but not what we wanted for our living room. So sadly we are back to looking for another fan with a bright light.

Nice design but...
the blades below the light creates a flickering effect in the room. Not exactly the way we wanted the room to be when the fan is on.

The ceiling light with fan is "clean,' efficient, quiet, and beautiful; I love it.
The light/fan was straightforward to assemble but the remote didn't work. The manufacturer replaced it at no charge very quickly. The inner transformer then had to be reset also. But that was quick and the 2nd remote works great.
It has a sleek, contemporary look, it is great for my space (a little shorter fan length than many standard ceiling fans) and I love it that it is energy efficient.

Really nice fan and great light.
I am really pleased with this fan and light. It looks really great and contemporary. My contractor had no problem putting it up. Y lighting and Modern Fan constumer service were also very helpful and knowledgable. Thumbs up to them.
I would for sure recommed this. I now have 5 modern fans in my home.

Another great product from Modern Fan
Modern Fan, makes by far the best fans, they really move air, are sleek and this one in particular really hugs the ceiling, quite amazing as it has an integral light fixture. My only complaint is that it only comes with fluorescent lamping, I know I know, because of their energy efficiency I guess we will all need to get used to their light quality sooner or later, yet as the first important fixture in my house to use fluorescent, I can't help but mourn the end of warm incandescent & halogen sources.

Very pleased.
I would actually give it a rating of 4.5. We are very happy with the fan. We have purchased two in the last year. We like that it has an Energy Star rating and a modern look. Installation was a little challenging, but my husband did it by himself. The wiring, even with the remote, was straightforward--it's just heavy. We will likely purchase one more Modern Fan in the next year.

Good Service
Items purchased arrived promptly. All items totally functional. I've purchased items modern fans previously from Ylighting.
By: Laure, Homeowner (Rhode Island)
The product met our requirements very nicely.
Installation was relatively easy although it would have been easier with a third hand.
Light output is very good, better than expected. A dimmable ballast would make it much nicer.
This is a very attractive contemporary look. The remote is simple and effective.
The hugger is very compact and unobtrusive. The remote is simple and effective.
I definitely recommend this product, in fact, I'm buying another one.

Disappointed
I am very disappointed that the light kit is cheap white plastic, and because it is designed for just this fan it is impossible to find a replacement. The rest of the fan is very well made, so I was surprised when I opened the box. At the price of this fan it should not be plastic.
