    Design by Ron Rezek.
    By The Modern Fan Company.

The Aurora Hugger is designed for a room with a low ceiling and the need for a primary light source in the center of the space. At only 12" in height and with a high-output indirect light source, the Aurora Hugger is a great solution for residential applications.

The Aurora fan incorporates a circline fluorescent lamp within a translucent diffuser, providing the incandescent equivalent of 180 watts of long-lasting, color-corrected, energy saving fluorescent light. The innovative Aurora fan qualifies for the EPA's Energy Star labeling as a highly efficient, energy conserving design.

The bottom rotor is die-cast aluminum and along with the other metal components is available in either a brushed aluminum or gloss white finish. The body of the Aurora is an acrylic diffuser which transmits light both downward and reflects light upward for complete room lighting. The three blades are plywood construction and painted to match the fan finish. Choose from 42" or 52" blade span.

Note: The fluorescent ballast is not dimmable. Any control ordered with the Aurora will be supplied in a non-dimming version.

    • Airflow measured in cubic feet per minute at high speed (CFM) = 6144.28
    • Watts at high speed = 69.6

    Ron Rezek

    Ron Rezek

Ron Rezek designed the world's first contemporary-styled ceiling fan, the Stratos, in 1986. But his list of accomplishments in the design world is long and varied, from lifeguard equipment to contemporary lighting. In 1997, Ron started The Modern Fan Co. in Ashland, Oregon, which produces and sells only contemporary ceiling fans.

His ceiling fans have been widely used in hotels, restaurants, retail and institutional applications, and all types of residential projects.

    Ron Rezek's Philosophy:
"I don't think contemporary means a stark white room. I think it means a tasteful alignment of important elements. There are some designers who copy the Modernists who have come before. But I think 'contemporary' is the pursuit of the new." "People assume that all contemporary fixtures are more functional than traditional ones. That is because contemporary fixtures are easier to clean and they seem to be more utilitarian based on their appearance. And because of their simplicity and lack of ornamentation, they also have an alliance with the industrial look. But all of this doesn't necessarily translate into function. The Modern Fan Co.'s fans are designed to be functional and energy efficient. This is part of being contemporary and pushing the edge. Energy efficiency is the wave of the future."

Fan looks nice, performs well, relatively easy to install, but makes a bit of noise.

Performs as expected and looks nice.

I have installed a total of three of the Aurora Hugger fans in my house now. They all perform as expected and look nice. The only problem I have is that the one in my bedroom hums a bit. I'm used to it now, but it kept me up for a few nights.

    Great Ceiling Fan!

The fan installed easily and the remote wall switch works just as I had hoped. It saved a lot of time during the install and looks sharp too.

    Plastic?

You get what you pay for and this fan is worth well worth it. It is both beautiful and well made. My favorite feature is the reflected light that fills the room unlike most ceiling fans.

A Mixture of Good and Bad Qualities - But It's Available!

Given what I paid for the fan I was pretty surprised to discover that the light cover is plastic. I haven't installed it yet so can't comment on how well it works but the blade pitch, etc. indicates it will be fine.

Perfect for an older house with small spaces and low ceilings; functional, modern and sleek.

The Aurora Hugger ceiling fan by the Modern Fan Company has a mixture of both positive and negative qualities:

On the plus side, it provides both a tasteful combination fan and light for rooms with low ceilings - not something always easy to find.

On the minus side, the unit hangs lower than many other Modern Fan products because the light is located above, rather than below, the fan blades. As a result, the fan blades hang lower than you might desire.

In addition, color quality of the light coming from the enclosed circular florescent tube is blue-ish. Better quality tubes may be available.

Also, the majority of the light from the unit is cast on the ceiling. When combined with the moving shadows cast by the fan blades, it can make for a very disturbing environment.

Finally, the only way to get to the circular florescent tube when replacement is necessary seems to be to remove all the fan blades together with their rotating mounting bracket and the plastic lamp shade. For those not mechanically inclined, I imagine it would be challenging. The fragile lamp shade is attached with three short and tiny screws making it difficult to install to the main unit. I'm not sure how well the shade would make it though repeated bulb changes.

I ended up returning the unit that I purchased because of the unresolved design problems with the light and also because my wife didn't like it.

We have had good luck, however, with other Modern Fan products, namely the Ball fan, which is also available in the "hugger" version.

    It's so pretty!

The fan is nicely designed, with a modern, streamlined look. The wall control has 3 fan settings and an on/off switch for the light. It looks perfect in a small room with a low ceiling; functional, modern and sleek.

    Simple, well designed & efficient

I am so happy to replace my traditional celiling fan with this beautiful design. It adds so much to to a plain box bedroom.

    Stylish and Functional

We're remodelling our large, suburban 1979 ranch. We have tried to be as energy efficient as possible,, using bamboo and ceramics on the floors and low VoC paints throughout. Another feature has been these Aurora fluorescent ceiling fans. So far we have installed 6 and we're very pleased. They are pretty w/o being overpowering, quiet, move a lot of air, throw enough light for even over-sized rooms while using very little electricity. We highly recommend them & look forward to the next 6 we'll order.

    Very easy shopping and transaction

The subtle contemporary look complements my colonial style house. The installation was more difficult than implied by the directions. Customer support was excellent. Sent us a replacement fluorescent tube after we reported that the original one was broken during shipment.

This is a wonderfully modern, functional and attractive neccessity.

I was looking for a fan light for over my kitchen table. I wanted a fluorescent light for energy savings. Although there are hundreds of fan lights on the market by specifying the type of lighting that I wanted the selection availability became very small. This fan light struck me immediately as not being a run of the mill light. The design is unique and causes it to stand out but yet it is not ostentatious. It suited me to a T. Now that I have it installed and am using it, I am so very pleased with my selection. Do not bother to send any $25 gift certificate. I will probably never buy another light in my lifetime.

The Aurora hugger fan has a great contemporary look, soft reflective light and short enough in depth that a talk person can walk under.

The fixture is close enough to ceiling to e functional in a room with an 8' ceiling. The light is conveniently dimmable and the remote feature works extremely well for fan speed, dimming and on / off funtioning. It has a minimalist look AND is attracctive and funtional.

    Nice design but...

We were very happy to finally find a nice looking fan with a bright light that didn't hang too low. But we were very diappointed after installation to notice the effect the fan blades had on the light in the room. Because the light is above the blades, when the fan is on, it causes the light in the room to flicker. The blinking isn't terrible, but not what we wanted for our living room. So sadly we are back to looking for another fan with a bright light.

The ceiling light with fan is "clean,' efficient, quiet, and beautiful; I love it.

the blades below the light creates a flickering effect in the room. Not exactly the way we wanted the room to be when the fan is on.

    Wonderful

The light/fan was straightforward to assemble but the remote didn't work. The manufacturer replaced it at no charge very quickly. The inner transformer then had to be reset also. But that was quick and the 2nd remote works great.

It has a sleek, contemporary look, it is great for my space (a little shorter fan length than many standard ceiling fans) and I love it that it is energy efficient.

Another great product from Modern Fan

I am really pleased with this fan and light. It looks really great and contemporary. My contractor had no problem putting it up. Y lighting and Modern Fan constumer service were also very helpful and knowledgable. Thumbs up to them.

I would for sure recommed this. I now have 5 modern fans in my home.

    Very pleased.

Modern Fan, makes by far the best fans, they really move air, are sleek and this one in particular really hugs the ceiling, quite amazing as it has an integral light fixture. My only complaint is that it only comes with fluorescent lamping, I know I know, because of their energy efficiency I guess we will all need to get used to their light quality sooner or later, yet as the first important fixture in my house to use fluorescent, I can't help but mourn the end of warm incandescent & halogen sources.

    Good Service

I would actually give it a rating of 4.5. We are very happy with the fan. We have purchased two in the last year. We like that it has an Energy Star rating and a modern look. Installation was a little challenging, but my husband did it by himself. The wiring, even with the remote, was straightforward--it's just heavy. We will likely purchase one more Modern Fan in the next year.

    Disappointed

Installation was relatively easy although it would have been easier with a third hand.

Light output is very good, better than expected. A dimmable ballast would make it much nicer.

This is a very attractive contemporary look. The remote is simple and effective.

The hugger is very compact and unobtrusive. The remote is simple and effective.

I definitely recommend this product, in fact, I'm buying another one.

love it, very unique, very different.

I am very disappointed that the light kit is cheap white plastic, and because it is designed for just this fan it is impossible to find a replacement. The rest of the fan is very well made, so I was surprised when I opened the box. At the price of this fan it should not be plastic.

no better fans than Modern Fans

We have been looking for contemporary fan. It was impossible to find something we like in stores. Finaly we got what we need. Just finished remodeling in our family room. This ceiling fan is very well made. It goes well with our new fireplace which is dark grey tile and black contemporary insert.

    Customer Questions

Q:  Do the Aurora Fans cause a strobe effect?

A:  Because there is a continuous light source (all the way around) the Aurora does not produce a true strobe effect. But some times the shadows behind objects in the room can appear to move a bit. The object is always lit but it is the shadow behind the object that can change angles.

Q:  Can multiple fans be operated from one remote control?

A:  For the Modern Fans- as long the fans are fan only and do not include light kits, multiple fans can be operated from one remote. Additional receivers will need to be ordered for each additional fan.

    Remodel Housings

In contrast to new construction housings, remodeling housings are appropriate when you have limited or no access to the space above a new fixture, such as in an apartment or a home without crawl spaces or attics above.

    New Construction Housings

In contrast to remodeling housings, new construction housings are bulkier and need to be installed between joist beams or onto hangar bars and thus you need full access to the space above the fixture. This style is best used if you are building in a new space, gutting a room, or have an attic above or pop out ceiling, etc.

    Non-IC Rated

Non-IC stands for: non insulation contact. Thus, non-IC-rated housings must be kept at least 3 inches away from any insulation.

    IC Rated

IC stands for: insulation contact. Thus, IC-rated housings can come in direct contact with thermal insulation.

    MR16 Halogen Bulb

MR 16 is a standard format for halogen multifaceted reflector light bulbs. MR16 lamps are regularly used in place of standard incandescent light bulbs as they harness and shoot light, resulting in less light loss than a traditional bulb. These are best used when you want focused light such as in a pendant over a countertop or an accent light on a painting.
