Modiss was started in 1994 after a young entrepreneur, Alfonso Fantal, wowed the crowds with an exhibit of his work in the Palau de la Virreina. Since then, the company has continued to embrace Fantal's innovation in design, originality in combining materials and forms, and search for the "soul hidden in the spaces". The company has achieved international recognition including the Good Design from the Chicago Athenaeum and the Pinnacle of American Society of Furniture Designers.
