What do you do when a small breakfast room has an installation point centered on windows and room shape, but will never be centered over the table? And please don't say "swag it." The Real Simple Ceiling Boom was proposed by a designer/architect to solve this lighting dilemma. Another requirement was for the lighting to not look "kitcheny." (made up word) Since this area of the house is visible from the living area, I did not want it to shout, "Kitchen!"
Well this light is a beautiful, if unexpected solution. Last night I left the lamp on, dimmed, and it made a beautiful and very unkitchen-like glow in the room.
Drawbacks:
1) The handle of the boom had a chip in the finish because it was not protected well during shipping. Several sections of the boom handle were secured together without padding between, creating an opportunity for this to happen. It took so long to receive the light after ordering that I accepted it "as is" rather than return it.
2) The boom swings wide and though there is lots of flexibility in positioning, it still won't be optimal for the space. The weighting is such that the shade will not stay in the uppermost position without adding a counterweight to the boom handle.
3) Part of the wire covering is visible at the moveable joint. Additionally, one must be careful to alternate the direction of adjustment or there is the possibility of unscrewing the installation from the ceiling.

New Construction Housings
In contrast to remodeling housings, new construction housings are bulkier and need to be installed between joist beams or onto hangar bars and thus you need full access to the space above the fixture. This style is best used if you are building in a new space, gutting a room, or have an attic above or pop out ceiling, etc.
Non-IC Rated
Non-IC stands for: non insulation contact. Thus, non-IC-rated housings must be kept at least 3 inches away from any insulation.
IC Rated
IC stands for: insulation contact. Thus, IC-rated housings can come in direct contact with thermal insulation.
MR16 Halogen Bulb
MR 16 is a standard format for halogen multifaceted reflector light bulbs. MR16 lamps are regularly used in place of standard incandescent light bulbs as they harness and shoot light, resulting in less light loss than a traditional bulb. If the lighting system is exposed to direct impact by water from splashing or dripping, which will make the fixture wet, then the location is a wet location. Your most common wet locations are uncovered outdoor areas.
