Design by Ron Rezek, 1986.
By The Modern Fan Company.

The first truly modern ceiling fan, Stratos has no reference to the Victorian era designs which still dominate the fan industry. Among its innovations is the structural down rod which gives the fan an impression of secure attachment to the architectural space and virtually eliminates the wobble so often seen in conventional fans. The patented, single piece, die-cast rotor eliminates the problems of balance and tedious assembly required with the classic blade iron configuration.

The Stratos is all die-cast and extruded aluminum and offered in either a gloss white or a hand brushed aluminum finish. The motor is a high power silicon steel design with 16 poles. These motors are designed for long life and silent running, and are controlled by dual capacitors. Energy Star rated when used as fan only. The optional light kit may be specified with either a halogen or fluorescent light source. Note: Any control ordered with a fan that has been configured with an energy-saving CFL will be supplied in a non-dimming version. The Stratos ships in a 17" overall height configuration. Optional downrods are available for alternate heights. The fan can accommodate a sloped ceiling up to 31° when using the sloped ceiling adapter (sold separately). Select white, aluminum or maple blades with a 42" or 52" blade span.

  • Airflow measured in cubic feet per minute at high speed (CFM) = 5449.01
  • Watts at high speed = 70.6
  • Airflow efficiency at high speed (CFM/Watts) = 77.18

Modern Fan Company

Modern Fan represents a new age in ceiling fans - the marrying of efficient function with contemporary design. Designed by Ron Rezek, the Modern Fan Company's models celebrate the modern idiom through mechanical simplification, geometric forms and contemporary finishes.

Ron Rezek

Ron Rezek designed the world's first contemporary-styled ceiling fan, the Stratos, in 1986. But his list of accomplishments in the design world is long and varied, from lifeguard equipment to contemporary lighting. In 1997, Ron started The Modern Fan Co. in Ashland, Oregon, which produces and sells only contemporary ceiling fans.

His ceiling fans have been widely used in hotels, restaurants, retail and institutional applications, and all types of residential projects.

Ron Rezek's Philosophy:
"I don't think contemporary means a stark white room. I think it means a tasteful alignment of important elements. There are some designers who copy the Modernists who have come before. But I think 'contemporary' is the pursuit of the new." "People assume that all contemporary fixtures are more functional than traditional ones. That is because contemporary fixtures are easier to clean and they seem to be more utilitarian based on their appearance. And because of their simplicity and lack of ornamentation, they also have an alliance with the industrial look. But all of this doesn't necessarily translate into function. The Modern Fan Co.'s fans are designed to be functional and energy efficient. This is part of being contemporary and pushing the edge. Energy efficiency is the wave of the future."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Ceiling Fan and Remote Option This is the 3rd Stratos Fan that I have purchased and with the latest I also ordered the wall and hand held remote control. This is a great option especially for locations like a bedroom where you can keep the hand held remote on the nightstand. Also, I purchased the Stratos without the lamp option but routed a power line from the remote receiver installed in the canopy of the fan to control a separate track lighting installation. The remote receiver can control, including full-range dimming, incandescent or low voltage lamps controlled with an electronic transformer up to 300 total watts. This allows for independent control of the lighting from the hand held and wall mounted remote as well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best fans ever! We built our house 19 years ago and my husband insisted on two of these fans for our two-story living room. I thought they were rather modern for our house but agreed to get them. He reminds me at least monthly that he picked them out and what a good choice they were. The design has grown on me and I love, love, love the air they move. They cool off our huge room wonderfully. When our bedroom fan went out and the design of the kitchen fan became outdated, we decided to get two more of the Stratos fans. Just had them installed last week (the electrician said they were pretty easy) and, yet again, love them. The light kit with the kitchen fan actually illuminates the island area where I often sit to do paperwork. And the remote control in the bedroom works great. These fans get five stars all the way around. Dealing with Ylighting was a pleasure as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Stratos Fan This was the sixth and seventh Stratos fan that I have bought. I always install these in my new homes. They are sleek, modern, very quiet and do a great job. I have never had a single problem with any of them. You can buy cheaper fans but they will not look, or last like this fan. The option of longer down rods is a great feature and the larger cross section of the down rods makes the unit very stable at any fan speed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Form meets function and then some This fan has exceeded my expectations. It's construction an easy install along with it's very unique and handsome looks has been added to my favorites short list Products that I will continue to purchase and reuse future designs. Nearly silent and well-made along with ease of use with remote only add to the fact that it is a strikingly handsome and sculptural & functional ceiling fan.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product for Contemporary Homes I purchased the Stratos Ceiling Fan for installation in a downtown loft. The contemporary design works very well in a loft setting. The design of the downrod really compliments the exposed architectural columns within the loft. Installation was very straight forward with operation is simple and solid. I highly recommend this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great fan but needs two people to install We have use a number of Modern Fans and really like their style and operations. The only issue we have is to get the clean look the fan post has to turn on locking tabs in the ceiling mount. We have found that to be very difficult to do with out a second person guiding the fan into place. But the fan is worth the extra effort.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unique & Gorgeous This fan adds a perfect touch of elegant design to our industrial loft space. Well-made, too. Love the column-like downrod. It's a unique fan for unique spaces, especially where you don't need/want a light kit. (We have track lighting in that area, and love the shape of the fan housing bottom.) Very pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great clean, modern design and superior functionality all in one! This is my second Stratos fan by Modern Fan, and I keep coming back for the same design because of its clean modern design and quiet operation. This time I bought the remote version and find it very appealing. We didn't have to run a line to the plug and now I can operate it while in bed.

I have a ceiling fan that looks exactly like the MOD-stratos on ur website. It's about 20 years old. I want to buy a light kit for it. How can I be sure its the same fan and the light will fit? Also, how would I remove the ball to replace with light?

Asked by: Geonif
Thanks for reaching out to us. If you know the exact manufacturer of your fan, that is a good place to start. If you are sure that it is in fact made by Modern Fan, they can advise you directly as to what components in their current stock are compatible with an older model, since they frequently do adhere to the same basic designs over time, which allows for parts to be swapped in and out. I would recommend contacting their tech support first, that way they can figure out exactly what model you have, and what needs to be ordered as a result. Their best contact is 888.588.3267. Please let us know if we can offer any additional clarification beyond this - we are happy to help! Parin YLighting Customer Service
