Design by Tom Dixon, and introduced to the US market in 2007.
Made in India, for Tom Dixon.

The design and inception of the Beat Lights originated from a field trip to India that Tom Dixon took his Royal College students on. Their mission was to investigate how design affects the livelihood of different cultures and peoples. They spent days with local tinkerers, brass beaters and marble workers. It was there that they discovered a method of metal manufacturing that appealed to them because of its heritage and unique aesthetic. The Beat Lights employ these traditional techniques in their production.

Inspired by the shapes of traditional Indian water vessels. Beat Light - Wide is a pendant made from spun brass with a hand-beaten interior. Choose from high gloss white powder coat, black patinated finish, brushed brass, or grey with a silver-plated brass interior. Provides direct illumination.

Shown in white.

Tom Dixon

Born in Sfax, Tunisia in 1959, to a French/Latvian mother and an English father, Tom Dixon moved to England aged four and spent his school years in London. He dropped out of Chelsea School of Art to play bass in the band Funkapolitan before teaching himself welding and going on to produce furniture.

Tom rose to prominence in the mid 1980's as "the talented untrained designer with a line in welded salvage furniture". He set up 'Space' as a creative think-tank and shop front for himself and other young designers. By the late 1980's, Tom Dixon's international reputation grew, he was approached by Italian furniture design company, Cappellini, for whom he desinged the Iconic "S" chair. In the 1990's, he became a household name and Jack, his polypropylene "sitting, stacking, lighting thing" designed for his own company Eurolounge was a symbol of the age.

Tom Dixon's appointment as Head of the UK design studio at the furniture retailer Habitat in 1998 was considered controversial. He came from a self-employed background instead of a corporate culture and was never considered "establishment". Tom Dixon led the company through its biggest makeover and quickly won recognition by becoming Head of International Design in 1999 and Creative Director in 2001. He was the public face of a collective team responsible for rejuvenating the Habitat brand, while maintaining Terence Conran's dream of enriching everyday life through simple, modern design and creating a shopping experience that is theatrical and intimate.

In 2000, Tom's work was recognized by the award of an OBE by Her Majesty The Queen. His works have also been acquired by the world's most famous museums and are now in permanent collections across the globe including Victoria and Albert Museum, Museums of Modern Art New York and Tokyo and Centre Beaubourg (Pompidou).

"Honestly, I can't remember ever holding an ambition to be a designer. It just slowly came over me as I rejected notions of being an artist or, a craftsman. Even today I prefer the idea of being an industrialist."- Tom Dixon.

Most recently Design Research Studio won their first ever hotel project, redesigning the iconic Thames-side Sea Containers House in collaboration with US hotel giant Morgan's Hotel Group due for completion late 2013.

Tunisian born Tom Dixon rose to prominence in the mid 1980s as 'the talented untrained designer with a line in welded salvage furniture'. Having worked for Italian manufacturer Cappellini where he designed the iconic S chair; Tom Dixon then went on to create his own company, 'Eurolounge', under which he made and sold the much celebrated Jack light. Tom Dixon was appointed head of design by Habitat in 1998 and later became Creative Director until his departure in January 2008. Tom Dixon was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 2001, and Designer of the Year 2008 from Architektur and Wohnen Magazine. He is the Creative Director of Tom Dixon and Artek.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Gorgeous fixture, but not a ton of light... Husband and I had been drooling over this fixture for some time. Finally pulled the trigger and made it a Christmas present to each other. It is installed over our dining room table now, and we love it. The contrast of the black matte exterior with the hammered brass interior is gorgeous. My one disappointment is with the amount of light the one small halogen bulb puts out-- it's very low lighting. Much lower than our previous fixture. We may have to add another one to supplement. I recommend this fixture if using it as an accent light, but as a primary source of illumination you may be left wanting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from sleek and strong...simple elegance with a groovy edge this fixture is great because it's very durable and sturdy. the shape and design and materials are so simple but the fixture has just enough edge to make it a definite statement piece. we used these in multiples which looks great, but they also look just as good by themselves. since the underside is brass it gives a glow to the light. the shape of this dixon pendant, along with the other shapes from this line, will no doubt stand the test of time and be just as relevant in 50 years as they are now....great design, great fixture.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lovely Warm Glow Well packaged and very well thought out in design. Easy to Assemble as all the mounting hardare was included. The light put out by the lamp is a lovely golden color and really brings out the the softness of wood (tables, floors, etc), keep in mind though that the max bulb is a 25 watt so this really is only mood lighting and not really usable for work (reading, desk, etc). Originally thought I would put this on a dimmer but there is not really anywhere to go from the on positon except off.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sharp Statement Piece Always been a fan of Tom Dixon designs. These lamps are modern, well made, and very inspired. I used them in a 'hand built' type residence where attention to artisan detailing made all the difference. The hand hammered brass interior lends texture and contrast to the smooth matte black finished exterior of the lamp. I am always a firm believer in design value and "design for all." It is unfortunate that these gems are so pricey. This is the only downside in my opinion.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Beautiful design but no light. The design is beautiful, especially in a group of the other beat lights but beware that the light is only designed to light up the interior of the light itself, not the rest of the room. As long as you don't need to light a room, or even an accent table, these look very nice hanging from your ceiling. If you want to save money, don't even bother wiring them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful! After drooling over this lamp for a while I finally jumped in and bought it. It was shipped very quickly and I was super pleased when I opened it. Just as beautiful as it looks online. It hasn't been hung yet (that's why I can't give it 5 stars until I check out the quality of light) but it will be soon! I can't wait to see it in action.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from We are impressed w/ the beat light overall. Quality is great, design -reason we bought it- is exactly what we were looking for. As said, like the light immensely but was slightly disappointed b/c it arrived w/ part of the cord slightly damaged. Went ahead and installed and attempted to fix the problem on our own. Otherwise Y Lighting was incredibly helpful and prompt w/ service etc..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Lights These lights look fantastic installed, the design is modern but the matte black finish and gold interior allow the fixture to lend itself to more traditional interiors. Fast shipping, excellent service. Thanks!

Is this product commercial grade or solely for residential use?

Asked by: caseyrose
Good question Caseyrose! This is a 120V UL listed fixture. It can be used in commercial applications as long as you do not require 227V. If you need 227V, the best thing to do would be to call our Product Specialists at 866.428.9289 and they will be happy to partner with our vendor for special modifications or to find you a suitable alternative that will suit you design vision! And is it actually brass ?  Aluminum ?

Asked by: seethree
Yep all colors have a beaten brass body with various powder coated color finishes. The grey version features a silver plated interior instead of gold. Parin YLighting Customer Service

Does the wide beat light hang from a flexible cord ?  Could I spray my own paint on top of the white finish ?  What kind of bulb base does it take:  halogen 2 pin ? Thanks again.

Asked by: seethree
Hi there. Yes the 98" cord is flexible and can be shortened by you if you need, and you should be able to paint the white shade, but do be advised that this would void any warranty on the unit. Also, the white shade is powder coated so that it is a soft matte finish, meaning that whichever paint you use would have to be able to stick to the current finish. Both the LED and Halogen versions need bulbs with a G9 base, which are easy to pick up in any local home department store. Thanks for contacting us! Parin YLighting Customer Service

Am considering this light for a round 69 in. dia. dinner table, but am very concerned about the amount and width of light it will produce. Some reviews now concern me further.  Can someone advise, or will I need to depend on being able to return it?

Asked by: Klinger
Thanks for your interest in this design. While this is a lovely fixture, it truly is intended to be clustered in groups for ambient lighting and an overall aesthetic, dynamic look. This fixture is not intended for task lighting. For a dining room table of that size where you certainly want to be able to interact with your guests and see them clearly in the evenings, one 25W halogen bulb would not be enough unless you had plenty of other supplementary lighting sources stationed around the room. Instead, consider using a brighter pendant of a higher wattage and save the beat lights for group clustering in environments that are not intended for task purposes. Feel free to give us a call at 866.842.6209 if we can provide any more insight beyond this! Parin YLighting Customer Service

Would this lamp be a good choice for a 54" round dining table? Enough light?

Asked by: mregueira
While this light is lovely in terms of design, it is a bit on the dimmer end of the spectrum. You'll notice that most of the images we provide showcase these lights being clustered together in groups for aesthetic lighting. This fixture features a 25W halogen bulb, roughly the same as 40W in standard incandescent wattage. I would recommend either considering clustering a few of them over a dining area as per the designer's intent, otherwise go with a higher wattage if this is the only light source and the table is going to function as a work/task area as well. There are a number of brighter, possible alternatives that would meet your design needs, so feel free to give us a call anytime at 866.842.6209 and our sales team can compare and contrast some options with you.
