Ron Henderson

Lighting by way of the B-2 bomber and the B-52’s? That’s the gist of Ron Henderson’s story. An aerospace engineering student by day and a DJ by night, Ron graduated from Auburn before spending time in the Air Force and at Boeing. A chance airport encounter led him to lighting, where he worked for multiple companies before founding Varaluz in 2006.

Varaluz was born of the belief that lighting should be both interesting and sustainable. Varaluz hand-crafts fixtures the old fashioned way out of eco-responsible materials.

Hand-crafting lends texture and personality that Ron feels cannot be achieved through mass-manufacturing. When not immersed in the throes of a lighting introduction, Ron geeks out on everything design-oriented and has a more-than-slight obsession with shoes and watches.

Varaluz - 70% recycled steel. 0% recycled style.

Varaluz was started to address issues the ligthing industry was shamefully ignoring. We have a reality facing us a people, as a nation, and as a world that requires us to be more responsible.

Energy efficiency certainly has an important place, but a larger impact can come from designing with responsible materials and designing out waste in the manufacturing and distribution process.

At Varaluz, most of the fixtures use steel that has 70% or greater recycled content and glass that is 100% recycled. Products use many sustainable and reclaimed materials in the glass or shades. Whenever you see the "eco-luz" designation on their products, you can be confident that the item is made with recycled or reclaimed materials and that Varaluz is committed to preserving the earth.

The old saying goes, "One person's trash is another's treasure." We just take it to beautiful extremes.

Great Color, Even Better Lamp!

I should begin by noting that, despite the color being partially labeled as 'tangerine', the light is really much more of a red, perhaps with a slight orange tint. That said, the color is still fabulous! I loved it so much, that I purchased the 'socket to me' lamp, also from varaluz, in the exact same color for a different room. And, as for the At-mesh-sphere, it's equally impressive. It has the potential to cast a lot of light, and, given the dimensionally asterisk-like arrangement of each of the 6 sockets, all surrounded by overlapping arcs of non-concentric circles, the entire piece is wonderfully reminiscent of an atom frozen in time and orbit. Love it!

I Love This Light, And You Will, Too!

Like the At-Mesh-Sphere light, also from varaluz, the color here is actually more of a red than it is an orange, despite 'tangerine' appearing in the name. However, the color is still wonderful! The light fixture is just as lovely: well-made, architectural, and able to cast amble light from a nearly 360-degree angle. If this lamp were manufactured in other fun colors, like, say, turquoise, yellow, or hot pink, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase again.
