Lighting by way of the B-2 bomber and the B-52s? Thats the gist of Ron Hendersons story. An aerospace engineering student by day and a DJ by night, Ron graduated from Auburn before spending time in the Air Force and at Boeing. A chance airport encounter led him to lighting, where he worked for multiple companies before founding Varaluz in 2006.
Varaluz was born of the belief that lighting should be both interesting and sustainable. Varaluz hand-crafts fixtures the old fashioned way out of eco-responsible materials.
Hand-crafting lends texture and personality that Ron feels cannot be achieved through mass-manufacturing. When not immersed in the throes of a lighting introduction, Ron geeks out on everything design-oriented and has a more-than-slight obsession with shoes and watches.See other lights/products from Ron Henderson
Varaluz - 70% recycled steel. 0% recycled style.
Varaluz was started to address issues the lighting industry was shamefully ignoring. We have a reality facing us a people, as a nation, and as a world that requires us to be more responsible.
Energy efficiency certainly has an important place, but a larger impact can come from designing with responsible materials and designing out waste in the manufacturing and distribution process.
At Varaluz, most of the fixtures use steel that has 70% or greater recycled content and glass that is 100% recycled. Products use many sustainable and reclaimed materials in the glass or shades. Whenever you see the "eco-luz" designation on their products, you can be confident that the item is made with recycled or reclaimed materials and that Varaluz is committed to preserving the earth.
