Editor’s Picks: Innovative Bathroom Lights

Contemporary design rides the cutting edge of technology and innovative style. This is especially true when it comes to interior design. Every room in the home is experiencing a fast-paced evolution. Your bathroom is no different. That’s why I’m highlighting what I feel are some of the most innovative bathroom lighting designs. These are some my favorite bathroom fixtures because, by virtue of their unexpected form or high-tech function (or both), they help bring bathrooms into the 21st century…and in some cases, may even propel them into the future.

Cityscape LED Wall Sconce from Hubbardton Forge

I am a huge fan of city skylines. You get to see all the different architectures from their respective eras coming together to create a complete visual that is often instantly recognizable. The great cities of New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago all have a skyline that is identifiable by legions of fans of urban landscapes. The Cityscape LED Wall Sconce brings this familiar visual into your bath space in style. This lighting fixture is the perfect addition to a hip and contemporary urban bathroom.

LightDisc 40 Indoor/Outdoor Light from Luceplan

If you love high tech modern design and like to splash in the tub, the LightDisc 40 Indoor/Outdoor Light is a great choice for your bathroom. This slim disc puts out a whole lot of light through light-diffusing polycarbonate. And its watertight construction means it can be installed safely virtually anywhere in the bathroom.

Uplift Sconce with Night Light from Robern

For a clean look and even, all-around light, you just can’t beat a cylindrical glass shade. But the simple look of the Uplift Sconce disguises a little secret: a slim night light on the top of each cylinder, which can be controlled separately with a second wall switch.

Grid 3 Light Bath Light from Blackjack Lighting

There’s no question that LED technology has improved the ability of lighting designers to be creative. LEDs fit in small spaces, and emit less heat than other lighting technologies. A contemporary example of this is the Grid 3 Light Bath Light. When you flip the light switch, the wall sconce illuminates a triple 5×10 dot matrix. This creates a futuristic visual that works perfectly with space-age retro, or even minimalist Scandinavian design themes.

eFinity Lighted Mirror with Vive Technology from Electric Mirror

I always turn on music while I’m getting ready in the morning. For years I used a Bluetooth speaker to play my jams in the bathroom; if only I had known about this amazing mirror! One of the coolest bathroom items I’ve seen is the eFinity Lighted Mirror with Vive Technology. It’s not just a stylish bathroom mirror, it’s also a Bluetooth enabled speaker system. Just link your phone, turn up the music, and get ready to sing in the shower.

Dove Wall Sconce from Arteriors

Who knew that innovative lighting could also be so charming? Fans of the hipster satire show Portlandia already know that great design is always made better when you “put a bird on it!” They might jest, but when it comes to the Dove Wall Sconce, I couldn’t agree more. This light brings the great outdoors inside with a mouth-blown glass avian sitting atop a wavy wire. While it is rare to see such a delicate adornment on a wall sconce, this little birdy reminds onlookers of a sweet song sung at day’s dawn.

SoCo Pendant Light from TECH Lighting

The SoCo Pendant Light from Tech Lighting may not be strictly bathroom lighting, but that’s actually what makes it so innovative in such an application. As shown here, it speaks to the growing trend of using pendant lights in place of wall sconces or bath bars over or on either side of a vanity mirror.

Anemone Large Flush Mount/Sconce from Robert Abbey

Since the bath is the room in which water flows, I love bathroom lighting that gives a nod to the life aquatic. A prime example is the Anemone Large Flush Mount. It reminds me of water spewing from atop a fountain, making the piece a perfect bathroom addition. The innovation comes in the form of the ingenious use of chrome-tipped bulbs. They ensure both bright, glare-free light and a nearly seamless blending-in with the many metallic sphere-tipped stems that surround them.

Celesse Wall Sconce or Ceiling Light from Hubbardton Forge

A wall sconce that really differentiates its look from the norm is the Celesse Wall Sconce or Ceiling Light. To me, the two rings have a swirling, cosmic look. However, to others, the piece may simply be an elegant slice of intelligent minimalism. To each their own!

Utopia Asymmetric Wall Sconce from Visual Comfort

Finally, I am a huge fan of the Utopia Asymmetric Wall Sconce. This piece is straight out of a Tim Burton stop-motion animated movie. Designed by Kelly Wearstler, it has a contemporary gothic vibe that fits in seamlessly with dramatic nature-themed interior designs. This piece adds a bit of intentional imperfection and luxury to your perfect bathroom.

While these may be my favorites, there are many other innovative bathroom lighting designs out there. Be sure to look at our bathroom lighting section to see all your options.
