From Bruck Lighting: Why ‘Made in the USA’ Matters
“Made in the U.S.A.” is a term that comes with a lot of meaning. For some, it implies a higher quality level. Or it can mean certain ethical guidelines were followed, meaning fair wages, cleaner working conditions, etc.
For Bruck Lighting, it has always been important for us to manufacture here in the United States. We see it as an investment in the prosperity of our country.
About 15 years ago, Bruck Lighting began to manufacture its own products. (Previously, Bruck was exclusively an importer of European lighting). We did this for multiple reasons, the most important of which was a greater sense of autonomy; to be much more self-reliant. It also guaranteed that we could offer a certain quality level that we could not promise if everything was imported.
For a company, creating innovative designs is much easier when using a U.S.-based designer and team. Things happen at a much quicker pace. Kinks are able to be worked out much faster and designers can get more creative when everything they need is right at their fingertips. Designers and manufacturers keep the U.S. customer in mind, and have a greater understanding of their needs. It’s always a bonus to have someone create something for an audience that they not only understand, but are a part of.
Products can also be assembled and shipped much more quickly. For example, instead of a 4-6 week lead time, Bruck now can assemble and ship many of their items in 5-7 days. Costs are lower now that they assemble in the U.S. as well, which they can pass on to their customers. Assembly teams can be trained in house by the manufacturers instead of a third party.
Mostly importantly, buying a product marked “Made in the U.S.A.” means you are providing a job to a fellow American. It’s an investment not only in a quality product, but in America’s future as well.
Of course, Europe is also known for its beautiful glasswork, and we do offer some fixtures that use this imported material. But because all hardware is made by our own team and the light fixture itself is assembled here (with the glasses added as a final step), these fixtures, too, are made in the U.S.A. (A large portion of Bruck’s hand-blown glass is also made in America. We have a local glass blower who can quickly create custom designs to suit a customer’s needs.)
For us, “Made in the U.S.A.” is more than just a label; it’s a mantra for design and manufacturing that has driven our company for more than a decade, and will continue to do so in the future.
