Notes From Milan Design Week 2019
Another Milan Design Week is in the books. And now that the dust has settled, we’ve had time to pore over the copious notes and pictures from our sourcing trip to take stock of it all.
From emerging trends, to our favorite exhibits, to what the trade is buzzing about for 2019, we’ve distilled our findings into this handy little cheat sheet we’re calling: Notes from Milan…
The Trends: Neon, Pastels, and Interactive Lighting
Neon: Bright, bold lights were on display from the likes of Kartell and Artemide (seen above).
Pastels: On the softer side of things, there was a lot of muted color, smokey blown glass, and pastel shades.
Interactive/Tactile Lights: Lights that required more than the usual flip of a switch—like this one here that needed to be “unscrewed” to emit light—added a playful element.
Buzz Words: 2019’s Talking Points
Many brands unveiled a new focus on building products from sustainable materials and recycled materials.
While Mother Nature was top of mind, brands are also making sure their entire sourcing chain is ethical.
Yet another thing we heard a lot about in regards to the production process. As consumers become more savvy about how things are made, brands are becoming more responsible about the effects of their products.
Our Favorite Exhibit: The Manzoni by Tom Dixon
From singing chandeliers to interactive wall projections, the design labels pulled out all the stops this year in Milan. But our favorite exhibit was Tom Dixon’s restaurant-bar-cafe-showroom concept that’s called The Manzoni and will continue to stay open for visitors to Milan year round.
In addition to the coffee shop, bar, and full-on restuarant, there are showroom spaces highlighting Dixon’s latest innovations. This space dubbed “the Jungle Room” was the perfect showcase for the SPRING Pendant in brass, available first, exclusively, through YLighting.

Team Y is a dedicated group of design devotees. We love everything that has to do with modern design, from products like lighting, furniture and decor all the way to interior design, architecture and city planning. What inspired the design? How does it work? What does it mean? We want to know. And once we know, we are constantly inspired to share what we've discovered with others who love design as well. That's Y.
