On Our Radar: Canadian Design
Canada has long been a wellspring of creativity and the country’s latest crop of modern designers are continuing that legacy in the form of cutting-edge modern lighting and furniture. Even more so lately, we’ve seen the Canadian design scene take its place among other hip designerly enclaves like Brooklyn and Scandinavia.
And it just so happens that we’ve launched a new and improved site experience for Canadian customers, with fast 2-day shipping on a majority of our expertly curated product assortment, quick filtering for ship-to-Canada products, and easy checkout—along with many other improvements. Thus, there’s no better time than now to turn our design eye northward.
So, without further ado, here are five Canadian design brands on our radar.
This Toronto based brand began as a series of garage explorations in design. In fact, hollis+morris is named for the intersection in Halifax where that garage sat. A great example of their forward-thinking design and ingenuity is the Bolt Pendant Light, a gracefully jagged linear suspension of wood embedded with LED that lets off a diffused glow in a striking form.
Vancouver’s own ANDlight is also at the cutting edge of modern design, with lighting that is at once quirky and utilitarian. Look no further than the Slab 150 made of 100% wool felt, which also makes for great acoustic sound-absorption.
Founded by creative director Omer Arbel in 2005, and splitting time between Vancouver and Berlin, Bocci launched with a single product: The 14 Series light. Today, Bocci still takes a small-batch artisan approach to lighting designs and the latest 84 Lighting collection features glass pendants mouth-blown with mesh to create an eye-pleasing glow.
Canadian brothers-in-law, Gabriel Kakon and Scott Richler, launched Canadian lighting and furniture brand Gabriel Scott in 2012. With varied backgrounds in jewelry-making, industrial design, and architecture, the pair bring a storied and chic style to Gabriel Scott.
Handmade in their Montreal studio, their gemstone-inspired pendants and chandeliers like the Luna Pendant define the Canadian luxury brand.
Somewhere between found-object art and ultra-modern lighting, Castor Design displays a youthful spirit with their varied recycled works. Ask founders Kei Ng and Brian Richer, what Castor stands for and they’ll tell you “Castor is French for beaver.” Their lighting and furniture have a custom feel and are usually made out of recycled and reused materials, such as burned out light bulbs, like the Invisible Chandelier.
